ASC HEALTH & WELLNESS NEWS
Greetings!
Happy Labor Day Week Everyone! It's hard to believe that September is already here, and hopefully this past weekend gave all of you a great opportunity for both fun and relaxation. For some of you, September rings in a mix of emotions. It signifies an end to the summer vacation days, but also means the exciting start of a new school year, football season, a new training regimen, and the beaches being free of tourists! Whether September means you're about to start running around like a madman, or that you'll finally have some free time to yourself again, never forget to sit back and remember what's really important in your life, and take time for it. Train your mind, your body, and your spirit, and you'll be sure to achieve the greatest wealth possible- your health! If you took the time to create New Year Goals, take a moment this week to pull them out and take inventory of where you are. Are you right on track? Do you need to start over? There's never a wrong time to write and rewrite your goals, so take the time to recommit to them today! Yours in Health & Success, Dr. Katrina |

EXERCISE TIP: Get rid of the pain in your butt
Have you ever noticed a tight pain in your buttock or hip region after a long day of sitting, driving, or running? Try the following simple stretch to get relief from hip or buttock spasm, stiffness, low back pain, and sciatic pain that often arrives due to tight glute (aka: butt) muscles. This stretch can be performed laying on your back, such as before getting up in the morning, or even when sitting at your desk.
Seated: Begin by placing your right ankle across your left knee. Next, pull your right knee toward your left shoulder without twisting your body. (This is not a low back stretch!) - If you find you're too tight to do this, simply lean forward keeping your entire back straight. Don't just slump forward! (Imagine there is string tied between the center of your chest pulling you toward the center of your shin bone.) - Hold for about 30seconds, repeat on the opposite side
Alternate Version- Laying down, face up: Keeping the left leg straight on the floor, pull your right knee toward your chest. Then, pull it across your body toward your left shoulder. Try not to let the straight leg bend or raise up off the floor. This is your body's way of cheating!
Good luck and happy stretching! Reminder: If you are experiencing pain of any kind, be sure to follow up with your healthcare provider. These exercises are provided strictly as a benefit to help you improve your general wellness, and should not be used in place of a proper diagnosis or treatment plan.

Where to Find... Our recommended Multivitamins: Supplements have always been a controversial topic regarding "should you or shouldn't you." Although some individuals do eat plenty of healthy foods, and should be getting enough nutrition in their daily meals, most individuals can still benefit from taking supplements. The reason? Nutrition isn't always about what you're eating, so much as what your body is absorbing and using for its daily energy requirement. With vitamins, you often get what you pay for, and time and real research should mean a lot more to you than the name brand and massive marketing campaign in Muscle Magazine. Also keep in mind that liquid vitamins, which are more readily absorbed by the body, are often more expensive.
I generally recommend that everyone at least be taking some kind of basic multivitamin pack such as the Men's MultiPack or Women's MultiPack. These are inexpensive and easy to shove in a purse or pocket to take at any point in the day. For more active and stress prone individuals, a more complete vitamin pack such as DoubleX, which contains vitamins, minerals, AND phytonutrients may be more suitable for your needs. For those that have specific health conditions or predisposition, (such as Fibromyalgia, Menopause, Arthritis, CVD, etc.) there are more specific nutritional supplements that can help improve and maintain your wellness. Talk to your health care provider for more information and recommendations specific to your current health.

SEASONAL NEWS: Sept. 18th is Run @ Work Day
The fourth annual Run@Work Day, sponsored by the Road Runners Club of America is taking place Friday, September 18, 2009! This event was organized to encourage working adults to fit time for exercise into their daily routine. The organization hopes that this day will be able to share the message that people need to incorporate at least 35 minutes of running, walking or some sort of exercise into their daily routine. Several large corporations already help support and reward an active lifestyle for their employees, but not all. With events like this, hopefully more companies will begin to take notice of the benefits of healthy living.
If you already make time during your daily routine to workout, kudos to you! If not, use this day to block out 30 minutes before, during, or after work and see how easy it can really be. Pack a bag, bring a washcloth and wear your sweat with pride! The RRCA puts their message plainly "If adults can lead by example, if companies can encourage healthy
living, then together we can combat the national inactivity and obesity
crisis gripping our nation and our children."
For additional information about Run@Work Day or to promote an event at your workplace, please visit the RRCA website at http://www.rrca.org/programs/runatwork
