ASC HEALTH & WELLNESS NEWS
Greetings!
Boats are out, graduation caps are flying, and the beaches and campgrounds are filling up more and more each day- Its summer! Even if you're one of the many of us staring out the window from your office, itching for the last tick of the clock each day to signal that you're free to play, the effects of summer activities (or lack thereof) may be catching up with you! Its so easy to find oneself busy and rushed during the summer, but don't forget about the importance of finding a balance. Give yourself plenty of time to sleep, relax, stretch, workout, and spend time with your family and friends. If you think you don't have time to take time for yourself, consider the following thought by Tim Ferriss , "Slowing down doesn't mean accomplishing less; it means cutting out
counterproductive distractions and the perception of being rushed." Sometimes slowing down temporarily is exactly what you need to be able to perform at full speed when its crucial, whether in the office or out in the game. The individual that makes a solid commitment to continuously feed and improve their body, mind and spirit will be the one that always performs at the top of their class! And don't forget, when you need a boost with getting past the aches, pains, and stress of your active lifestyle, Action Sports Chiropractic & Wellness is here to keep you going! Thanks again, and best wishes for a fantastic month ahead!Yours in Health & Success, Dr. Katrina |

EXERCISE TIP: Mobility before Stability Lee Burton and Gray Cook are well known instructors on the benefits of functional movement patterns including how important full movement is to preventing injury in our daily activities. Here's a few points to remember when planning your next workout:
1. Always work on mobility first. Yup. That means stretching and flexibility training, NOT JUST STRENGTH! If you don't have full range of motion, you'll only be training your muscles in part of their range. You wont be developing stability, just stiffness.
 2. If you know you aren't performing a lift or activity correctly, or aren't quite sure of how to improve your technique, take the time to ask a professional- most gyms have personal trainers on hand ready to answer questions. Note that I said professional, not just your gym buddy whos "been doing 'it' for years". They could be wrong for years! Likewise, taking a golf lesson, tennis class, etc. can really prevent injuries typically caused by repetitive motions of dysfunction.
3. Just because a muscle is big and thick doesn't mean it actually works for anything other than "the gun show". Don't be afraid to back up and work on the key fundamentals once in a while. Slow, steady, refined motions help to get the proper nerve patterns firing again.
4. Keep in mind that your body changes with time, and your workouts might need to, as well. It can be hard to admit to ourselves that we are no longer that flexible 18 year old dancer or ripped 21 year old football player anymore. Do yourself a favor and get over it. Figure out what your body is and isn't currently capable of and little by little, build from there.
Don't want to spend the time or $$? Think of it this way, which is more expensive AND takes longer? The one or two classes spent on improving your technique and preventing future injury, or the amount spent to rehab from the pain and discomfort of injury?
Reminder: If you are experiencing pain of any kind, be sure to follow up with your healthcare provider. These exercises are provided strictly as a benefit to help you improve your general wellness, and should not be used in place of a proper diagnosis or treatment plan.

SEASONAL NEWS: CALIFORNIA PARKS
As the California budget crisis continues to threaten our State and National Parks, your voice is needed!
Weather you're a resident of California or not, you've probably heard the story about the massive potential California State and National park closures. This past Monday June 15th, the Budget Conference Committee voted to eliminate
$70 million in general fund money earmarked for support of the state
parks system for the 2009-10 fiscal year. This means close to 220 parks will be closed indefinitely. However, there is hope that a proposed State Parks Access Pass would be employed to create a dedicated funding source to keep parks open. This annual $15 surcharge would be added to vehicle license fees; a proposal that is still to be voted on by the committee, but holds a potential estimated budget savings of about $143 million generated annually and put toward the parks system.
Needless to say, if you love the outdoors and, like me, would hate to see some of our favorite parks and trails closed, the Parks need our support! This weekend of June 20th, 2009 The California State Parks Foundation has asked for your support in their "SOS Campaign" (Save Our State parks.) The Foundation is requesting that people download or create their own green ribbon, wear
it during their park experience, and upload photos or video clips to
the Cal Parks website, which can beaccessed here. There will also be multiple park events planned over the weekend, including one at Torrey Pines North Beach Parking Lot, Saturday June 20th from 9am-noon.
Please show your support in whatever way you can, and help keep our California Parks from being closed this summer! For additional information regarding the current Park situation, please visit http://www.calparks.org/takeaction/.
