EXERCISE TIP: Standing Doorway Stretch

Whether you are the office manager that spends way too much time at the computer, the meat-head that spends way too much time doing bench press, or simply like the majority of Americans that could use some improvements in their posture try the following exercise for opening up the front of the body and stretching your way to pain relief. Quadriceps Stretch

1. Begin by standing beside the corner of a wall or doorway facing at a right angle (perpendicular) to the wall. Bend the arm closest to the wall to a 90 degree angle as if to say the pledge.
2. Next, step just close enough to the wall or door frame so that you are able to place the inside of your forearm against the surface of wall. Position the bent elbow at shoulder height, keeping your shoulder relaxed.
3. Without moving the arm away from the wall, step forward with the inside leg. Be sure to keep the body facing forward and upright. Lunge forward slightly toward the front leg until you feel a gentle stretch across the chest and into the shoulder area. (If you're really tight, you may even feel this stretch into the anterior neck and arm. ) Hold 30 seconds, and repeat on opposite side. Do NOT do both sides at once! Although faster, many times you'll feel less of a stretch, and have the tendency to perform the exercise incorrectly.

Benefits: Stretches the pectoral muscles around the chest and anterior shoulder. Opening up the front of the body can help to decrease the stress and strain that can cause pain and stiffness in the neck, shoulders, and upper back.

Reminder: If you are experiencing pain of any kind, be sure to follow up with your healthcare provider. These exercises are provided strictly as a benefit to help you improve your general wellness, and should not be used in place of a proper diagnosis or treatment plan.

Headache AnxietySEASONAL TIPS: National Anxiety & Depression Awareness Month

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 18.1% of Americans are affected by anxiety disorders and 9.5% of Americans are affected by depressive disorders.

This may not seem like a huge statistic, but if you or someone you know is among the population affected, you understand just how important and far-reaching it is. Anxiety and Depression can affect not only the one experiencing the disorder, but also those relating to the individual. Both conditions can greatly affect your productivity, performance, and physical health, and interpersonal relationships. Dr. Jack D. Maser, PhD states that sometimes these conditions "...dramatically reduces or eliminates productivity and significantly intrudes on an individual's quality of life; and for which friends, family and even the patient can find no obvious cause." However, not everyone experiencing anxiety or depression are actually aware of it, and many of those that are may be unsure of how to cope or deal with their effects.

If you believe that you may be suffering from depression or anxiety, we strongly encourage you to take advantage of the resources that surround you. Free in home, online screenings for Depression or Anxiety
are available to you 24hours, with further resources on where to turn for help.

For additional help here in San Diego, The Association for Compassionate Transformation is committed to raising awareness of all individuals affected by anxiety and depression and the need for early identification and treatment. A.C.T. will provide free screenings for anxiety and depression for children and adults to promote public education about anxiety and depression during the annual observance for the entire month of May. For more information, please contact Dr. Drecun at Dr.Drecun@a4ct.com or (858) 792-3541.
