EXERCISE TIP of the MONTH: IF THE SHOE FITS...
Have you ever talked yourself out of a workout because "every time you run/walk/hike/go on the beach/etc.." you end up with shin splints or (again, fill in the appropriate complaint). Well, don't give up that workout plan so easily. Returning to your favorite activity or exercise might be as simple as changing your shoes. Unfortunately, many of us chose our footwear based on our latest favorite color or an old habit of only a particular brand because once upon a time you heard they were the best, or once had a pair that were just perfect! (Never-mind the fact that you had them in high school). We completely forget the fact that our feet might have extremely different requirements than what the shoes we pick can provide. So here's two tips: 1. If your shoes are new, find out if the brand offers some sort of warranty or return policy. You might be able to get the correct fit in a different style or size that isn't typically on the shelf. For example: Off- the- shelf Nike generally runs narrow width, but if you ask or order special, you can often get a wider width or toe box on several of their styles. 2. Take the time to go to a truly good shoe store where the employees have been trained in motion analysis. Unlike the high school employee that is working part time for the benefits, places such as RoadRunner Sports, Snails Pace, and a few others actually train their people in gait analysis, proper fit and needs for your feet based on your arch, width, and more.
Trust me; the health of your legs, knees, hips and back are worth it! Besides, if your shoes fit right, you might actually find yourself wearing them more!
Reminder: If you are experiencing pain of any kind, be sure to follow up with your healthcare provider. These exercises are provided strictly as a benefit to help you improve your general wellness, and should not be used in place of a proper diagnosis or treatment plan.

DID YOU KNOW...ASC Provides Functional Diagnostic Medicine
Functional Metabolic Testing, also known as "Functional Diagostic Medicine" is fast becoming known as the true key in opening the door to total health and wellness. With the many advancements in scientific laboratory testing procedures that have occurred throughout the last few years, functional testing now provides the ability to not only assess your current health conditions, but provides the ability and insight for individualized therapy effective in both prevention and treatment of a wide range of conditions and diseases.
By uncovering the underlying metabolic processes of the body, many patients have finally found relief from conditions that had previously gone on undetected, and may have otherwise progressed into considerably worse situations. Based upon the results of the lab tests, health care providers are able to determine or confirm the assaulting pathology, and thus begin treatment options that are directed toward restoring normal function and physiology.
Have you been experiencing stress, fatigue, nagging muscle pain or injuries, heartburn, weight gain, or believe your health is being affected by a hormonal, digestive, metabolic, or chronic condition? Would you like to find out the hidden elements that have been keeping you from finding relief and feeling your best? Then please contact us today to find out if Functional Diagnostic Testing would be right for you.
Not in the area? Not a problem. We are more than happy to assist in directing you to a testing facility near you.

SEASONAL TIPS: CHECK UP FROM THE NECK UP
For some reason, whenever Tax Season rolls around, or when businesses are in some sort of stress, I end up hearing an increased number of complaints about neck pain, headaches and fatigue. Gee, I can't imagine why, can you? Actually, I can, and the list could go on indefinitely. However, here are a few tips that you can address on your own to help decrease your pain and improve your much needed sleep.
1. Get a good pillow. Just because a pillow is made of 100% Super Rare Goose Feathers from Zimbalaniazasterban doesn't mean its a good one. Often one that feels nice and soft and squishy in our arms is exactly the one we should put back. Or just keep it to cuddle with. To find a good one, test it out: · Your head and neck should remain level with your mid and lower spine. When lying on your back, your head and neck should remain level with your upper back and spine. · Choose firm foam and materials that press back and support the head. · If you find yourself sleeping on your side with one hand propped under your pillow, that's a clue that you're not getting the support you need from that pillow. · There is no such thing as a universal fit when it comes to pillows. Find one that is consistent with the shape and size of your body.
2. Stop the Grind. If you've ever woken with jaw pain or stiffness, chances are you're clenching or grinding your teeth at night. This will eventually not only wear away your teeth, but can cause increased jaw sensitivity, neck pain, and headaches. Chiropractic care can help immensely with this problem, but only can last if you address the actual grinding activity. Easiest way to do this? Get a mouth guard for sleeping, or better yet- speak with your dentist about getting a fitted "night splint" to help protect your teeth.
3. Stretch before bed. Take 3 whole minutes away from the computer or TV and stretch your neck out. Don't do head rolls, just stretch- take a look at the 3-Way Neck Stretch from our August issue for some easy hints on how to hit those problem areas best.
