EXERCISE TIP of the MONTH: THE FANTASTIC FOAM ROLLER

If you have ever experienced a stiff upper back, leg pain, knee pain, tight glutes or wanted to improve your core stability, getting one of these little baby's is a MUST! Why? Without going into extreme detail, they just plain work! Here is one exercise to use with one to help strengthen postural muscles, relieve upper back & neck pain, AND help stretch the chest region all in one simple move:
1. Lie on your back with one end of the foam roller behind your head, and the other just below your buttock. Your legs should be bent so that your feet are firmly on the floor. Arms should be palm up, straight out to the side. 2. Keeping your shoulders relaxed, begin by slowly moving arms along the floor upward in a "snow angel" motion, stopping at the point that the back of your hands feel as though they are lifting from the floor. 3. To return arm to side, imagine drawing your elbows together behind your spine. Pull toward your sides as far as possible while keeping the backs of your forearms and elbows against the floor. 4. Repeat. If done properly, you should feel a stretch across the front of your shoulders and into your chest area AND feel the muscles between your shoulder blades squeezing as you draw you elbows up and down by your sides.
DON'T HAVE A FOAM ROLL? Do the above exercise on the floor until you are able to purchase one or find one at the gym. And yes, we do have them available for purchase at ASC. Please feel free to swing by at any time, but you might want to call first since they move fast! 858-481-0303
Reminder: If you are experiencing pain of any kind, be sure to follow up with your healthcare provider. These exercises are provided strictly as a benefit to help you improve your general wellness, and should not be used in place of a proper diagnosis or treatment plan.

SEASONAL TIPS: What to Tell Your Doctor
If one of your New Year Resolutions has been to improve your health, its important to know how to communicate with your health care professional. Unfortunately, I have heard the stories of numerous patients with long term problems that could've been prevented or improved long ago had they just told someone about what was going on. "I didn't say anything because the doctor never asked" and "I didn't think it was important" don't help you or your provider to direct you on the way to better health. So, here are a few tips to use and remember before going to your next appointment or physical:
1. If you are over the age of 25, or are under a high stress or exercise routine, start getting an annual physical. Why? Not only can you potentially catch and head off various physical conditions from the early, but it will allow you to keep "base-line statistics" which numerous life insurance like to see in order to give you the best rates down the road. 2. Do not minimize symptoms: even if you feel that they are not related to your condition, your doctor needs to know about them. They may be clues to underlying factors affecting your main and overall condition. 3. Be ready to tell your doctor: · When your symptoms started and how if you can remember · What you are feeling, and if/how your symptoms have changed · How they are affecting your life, · What makes the symptoms better and worse, and · Be specific. The more specific your explanation, the more helpful it is. 4. Write down all your questions and concerns before going to your appointment especially if you know you have difficulty remembering everything that is going on when you are there. 5. Don't wait for your entire body to be destroyed before seeking help! Not only does it makes it more difficult to work up for your health care provider, but the longer you wait, the longer it may take to improve. If you have a chronic condition, don't expect miracles to happen overnight. 6. Listen to your doctor's instructions, and follow them. Advice is given for a reason, and usually it's meant to help. If you're confused about what or why you are doing something, or it doesn't seem to be working, ITS OK TO ASK QUESTIONS and talk to you doctor before you simply quit doing or taking something that has been recommended.
