2008 Booker Man Prize

This prize is the annual contemporary fiction award for full length novels written by a citizen of the British Commonwealth. Here's the shortlist:

The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga.  WINNER (library owns)
Balrams journey from darkness the of village life to a life of entrepreneurial success is "utterly amoral, brilliantly irreverent, deeply endearing and unforgettable.

The Secret Scripture by Sebastian Barry.  (library owns)
The story of life blighted by terrible mistreatment and ignorance and yet marked still by love, passion and hope. An alternate secret history of Ireland. 
                            
A Fraction of the Whole by Steve Toltz.   (library owns)
A memorable story of a father and son whose spiritual symmetry transcends all their many shortcomings.

Sea of Poppies by Amitav Ghosh.  (release date 10/14/08)
In a time of colonial upheaval a panorama of characters comes to view themselves as ship brothers. An unlikely dynasty is born, which will span continents, races and generations.

The Clothes on Their Backs by Linda Grant.  (not available in US)
A story about concealed past, dark subjects, dark places and stark choices and how the clothes we wear define us all.
 
Northern Clemency by Philip Hensher.  (not available in US)
Charts the relationship of two families and creates a deeply moving portrait of Britain's social landscape through the Thatcher era.
