Entrepreneur of the Month: Dr. Jan Van Blarcum, PhD |
Our future belongs to our children, and children are our future. They will take over the role of caretakers of this good Earth when we are no longer able to do so. One woman, Dr. Jan Van Blarcum, PhD, took on the challenge of educating children when, in 1999, she founded Creative Tutors 4 Kids International, Inc., a Plano, Texas for-profit company, which provides in-home, one-on one tutoring for children in grades PK-12. Dr. Van Blarcum and her tutors (currently over 600) are highly trained, degreed educators with 8-10 years of educational experience. They realize that each child possesses unique talents and gifts that are waiting to be shared and give children the tools they need to be successful in the classroom, unlock potential to a world of opportunity and make their dreams a reality. In her first year in business, she had 150 students and about 35 tutors. Today, the company lists about 20,000 students and expects 2009 revenue to reach $1.2 million.
The first Creative Tutors franchise was sold in 2004, and currently has 12 franchisees with locations in North Texas, Houston and North Carolina. Franchises cost between $19,500 and $25,000 based on an area's median income and student makeup, plus a 5% royalty of monthly gross revenue. Each franchisee signs a 10-year franchise agreement for a territory which is defined as one owner per school district
In 2004, Dr. Van Blarcum established a not-for-profit public charity, Creative Learning 4 Kids, Inc., that works to raise funds to provide one-on-one tutoring and attendance at educational camp programs for disadvantaged students. As each franchise is established, the franchisee begins to raise funds within the community to fund tutoring services for students in that community. It is the goal of Creative Tutors 4 Kids to make access to skills necessary to be successful in school available to every child that needs assistance. The non-profit has provided tutoring services to over 100 students in need, mostly in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and has helped Dr. Van Blarcum achieve her personal mission of meeting the educational needs of every student, no matter how they learn.
Creative Tutors 4 Kids believes in improving the future of the community one child at a time. "As kids are growing up, they will have failure. But success comes from failure," said Dr. Van Blarcum. "It's getting on the right path, and you can't do it alone." Today, the company tutors about 20,000 students.
"The great thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you."

What can I do to help speed up collection of my factored invoices? |
Returned invoices and statements can delay Mazon's in-house collection processes by up to ten days and can delay future funding on an individual customer's account. It normally takes approximately 1-3 business days for a mailed invoice to reach your customer, another three days to be returned for incorrect addresses, one day to research an incorrect address, and another three days in the mail again (ten days possible delay) before a customer can pay an invoice mailed to a wrong address. Therefore, if you are aware of a customer's change of billing address change, please submit this information to Mazon. This will result in a faster invoice payments posted to your account. Additionally, all of our clients are strongly encouraged to submit new customer name and contact information 1-3 business days prior to turning in invoices for processing to prevent possible delay during busy times in the initial funding of invoices.

It's Never Too Late |
Many of us have regrets in life. We look back on "what might have been" and wonder how things would have turned out if we had made different decisions in the past. One of the most empowering things you can ever learn is that, "It's never too late to become the person you might have been." (George Elliot) Sometimes the only thing stopping you from becoming the person you might have been is the mistaken assumption that you have missed your best opportunities. The moment you reject this negative assumption, a whole new world of opportunities opens up to you. Let's look at some real life examples that will illustrate exactly what I'm talking about.
My friend, Kate, grew up with a love of dancing and musical theatre. Throughout her adult life, she often wished that she would have had the opportunity to sing and dance on stage when she was a young girl. However, for many years, she assumed that she had missed her opportunity. After encouragement from her husband, Kate joined an amateur theatre company where she fulfilled a lifelong ambition to sing in the chorus of a musical production. Was it Broadway? No, but for Kate it was one of the most satisfying and enjoyable experiences of her life.
Another great example is one of my music students, Alan, who started playing the clarinet as a young boy but had to give it up when he left school to get a job. As an adult, Alan loved jazz and often regretted the fact that he had stopped playing. One day Alan came to see me and asked if I would consider teaching him music. I agreed, and over the next year he prepared for his music exam. He received an A+ in his exam and a special commendation for his effort -- he was 74 years old! Will he ever play in a professional jazz band? Probably not, but Alan now enjoys playing the clarinet a lot more than thinking about his lost opportunity.
Today, I would like to challenge you to think about "the person you might have been" and reject the assumption that you have missed your best opportunities. Instead, become aware of the many opportunities that are still open to you and look for ways to reconnect with your childhood dreams and passions. Always remember that your future holds far more opportunities than those you may have missed in the past. Once you understand this fact, you will discover that it really is never too late to become the person you might have been. Notary Facts |
Notarizing a blank or incomplete document can be against the law in several states (i.e. California, Colorado and Florida), and is highly discouraged in all states. Documents that are complete except for blank spaces that will be filled in later also have a great potential for fraudulent misuse. Many times it is the signer who is a potential victim by insisting that an incomplete document be notarized because it is inconvennient to obtain needed data to complete the document and the signer may decide to get the notarization out of the way first. The prudent Notary will decline to notarize a blank sheet of paper, and ask any signer to fill in the blank space of an incomplete document before notarizing. If the spaces are inapplicable and intended to be left blank, the signer should be asked to line through each space (using ink) or to write "Not Applicable" or "NA" in the blanks. Rare and acceptable exceptions for leaving space blank on a document are if a document needs to be circulated for additional notarized signatures, and to preserve confidentiality in adoptions, it is generally acceptable for the names of birth mothers or adoptive parents to be filled in after certain adoption forms are signed and notarized.

Do You Do D? |
Want to boost your immunity against colds and flu? Try vitamin-D. In the largest study of the nutrient's effect on respiratory infections, researchers found that people with the lowest vitamin-D blood levels were 36 percent more likely to catch colds and flu. And about 80 percent of the U.S. is vitamin-D deficient, meaning a blood level of less than 30 nanograms per milliliter. Vitamin-D assists the body in producing a certain type of protein (known as cathelicidin) which helps the immune system fight against infections, and this protein seems to be very important in killing viruses and bacteria. This association is particularly stong in people with asthma and other lung diseases such as emphysema.
A simple blood test for what is called 25-hydroxyvitamin-D is the best way to determine what your vitamin-D level is. The current recommendations for vitamin-D intake range from 200 to 600 IU (international units) a day, depending on who's doing the recommending. But the amount that is needed for immune health may be considerably higher. (Be sure to check with your physician before starting any vitamin therapy.) (Resource: Remedy Magazine, Chrystle Fielder)

Suppertime |
The husband went to his doctor for a physical and the doctor said he was in good health and asked if he had any other questions. The husband said, "I am a bit worried lately about my wife's hearing." The doctor replied he could test the wife by asking her a question in his normal voice and see if she responds.
That evening, the husband arrived home and said, "Hi, honey, I'm home. What's for supper?" The wife did not reply. He said again, "Hi, honey, I'm home. What's for supper?" Again, no reply. He waited a couple of minutes and repeated, "Hi, honey, I'm home. What's for supper?"
His wife approached him from behind and said, "For the third time, dear, fried chicken!"
