Greetings! |
This month marks our one-year anniversary of publishing the Building Bridges newsletter. We have come a long way from that first issue by adding more varied subject content and enhanced format. This month we added the "view in browser" function to allow for internet viewing of each issue - and all issues continue to be archived on our website for reading (www.mazon.com). In addition to a large nationwide reader base, Building Bridges also has many new international subscribers - welcome to everyone! Our goal for the second year is to double our current distribution list! Best regards, Lisa Mazon | |

Enterprise of the Month: Cube Solutions, LLC |
"When the going gets tough, the tough get going." This is so true for Michelle Swanger and six co-workers who lost their jobs in 2000 when the remanufactured office furniture company for which they worked was dissolved. Unemployed but experienced in the office furniture business, the friends launched Cube Solutions, LLC, an internet-based enterprise owned by Ms. Swanger which sells a broad array of economically priced office cubicles, chairs and tables as well as assisting cost-cautious customers with space planning. The biggest challenges were not where to set up business, buy products or find customers for their new business, but setting up processes and business structures, which included defining job responsibilities and setting goals. With a strong sales background, but admittedly light on business financial processes, Ms. Swanger engaged the assistance of people more experienced in financial strategies to help set up their financial structure. She also hired people to help her run the company which enabled her to focus more attention on increasing revenue through enhanced products and services. With a warehouse operation in Trenton, Texas, Cube Solutions currently has an employee base of 25, and still retains the core group at the Dallas location. In 2008, business revenue increased 8% to $5.5 million, with about 80% of sales coming from the internet. Considering the current recession, Cube Solution's 2009 forecast is a bit shaky. However, Ms. Swanger says, "You can't just sit around -- you have to be creative and work that much harder" to fill sales gaps. Repeat business accounts for at least 40% of Cube Solution's sales, which Ms. Swanger accredits to a strong emphasis on customer service throughout the company. Managing or Financing Accounts Receivable |
Since 1976, Mazon Associates has been lending money to businesses based on the creditworthiness of our clients' customers. The monthly sales volumes of our clients range from $5,000 to $1,000,000. In 2008, Mazon factored millions of dollars with a loan loss ratio of less than one-tenth of one percent. Mazon has recently expanded our services to include managing accounts receivable collateral for banks and businesses. This product functions under Mazon Accounts Receivable Management, Inc. and utilizes the same processes as our current factoring product, but with the bank being the funding source, if needed, to its customers and Mazon being the manager of customers' accounts receivable on behalf of the bank or business. Former Mazon clients who have enjoyed success with Mazon's business factoring services, and have since moved on to bank financing, may want to utilize our services through our new bank program or on a fee basis for a business. Mazon can help a company manage their accounts receivable by providing credit information, processing invoices and payments, making collection calls on past due accounts and producing detailed reports. Please contact us, or have your bank contact us, with any questions you might have.

Failure and Success |
One of the most important lessons you can learn on your road to success is that failure is not a final destination, but rather a place you pass through on your way to achieving your goals. There is only one road to Success City. The road to Success City passes through Failureville. One of the main reasons people never reach Success City is because they are so afraid of driving through Failureville that they never begin their journey. So what does this mean in the real world? It means that failure is not the opposite of success, as many people assume. On the contrary, failure is an important part of achieving success. In fact, it is usually through the process of trying and failing that we learn the lessons we need in order to ultimately achieve our goals in life. A favorite quote regarding the relationship between failure and success comes from the legendary basketball player, Michael Jordan: "I've missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life and that is why I succeed." When you understand the fact that success lies on the other side of failure, you will be much better prepared for the journey that leads to achieving your most important life goals. (Quoted from Anthony Fernando, www.anthonyfernando.com).

Numbers in the News |
You type a word or phrase into your browser's search box, press "enter," and up pops an array of ". . . about 25,000,000 results" (more or less, depending on your particular search)! Hoping you found the right item, you pick one of the topics, click on it, and up pops a website page. But what happens behind the scene? Search marketing is the bread and butter of Google, Yahoo, MSN and others and keeps the internet financially secure. Individuals and businesses who subscribe to search marketing to help their businesses grow usually set up a price-per-click ("ppc") for their "key word" and "key phrase" searching (also called an advertisement). Each time someone searches on one of these key words or phrases, and then clicks on the resulting "ad," there is a charge to that website business for you visiting their site. Sometimes, if a business's budget is small and the daily budgeted dollars have been used up, the search word/phrase will stop and disappear from the internet search engine until the next day, or the next month, depending on their internet marketing setup. For this reason, sometimes you may search for the same website at a different time of the day and cannot locate it! Bigger companies with bigger budgets may have unlimited searches for their word and phrase ads , but the advertising costs are still there. And, what about those other 24,999,999 results from your internet search? The highest "bidders" for internet search space will always appear on the first five pages of a searched word/phrase. Search marketing firms guesstimate that internet users will tire of looking at more than the first five pages, so what remains searchable are actually lower-cost or free search words, phrases, or website names that get lost in the mix of the world-wide-web ("www") - and these websites rarely if ever get found during a general internet search. (Note: Website businesses are not charged for visitors who access their sites directly from the browser's address bar, or from a direct clickable link to their site, such as in a document or email.)

Notary Facts |
Considering the increasing ratio of foreign nationals entering our country, Notaries may at times find themselves faced with questions about immigration documents. Please be aware that the office of Notary Public in the United States is completely different from that same office in a different country and it is illegal for a Notary Public of the United States to give legal advice about immigration documents, prepare immigration documents, etc. In fact, in the U.S. a Notary may even be imprisoned for simply giving advice about immigration! If someone asks you for immigration advice, direct them to an immigration attorney or to an office of the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service. Productivity Myths That Hold You Back |
Myth 5: Creativity can't be fit into a system. Fact: Maybe you believe that productivity stuff is for business people, not creative people. But creative work is still work, and just as susceptible to procrastination, poor planning, and shoddy work practices as bookkeeping, house painting, and world domination. And while you may have a great grasp of the demands of your creative work, records need to be kept, clients need to be contacted, taxes need to be filed, and projects need to be invoiced. Cinco de Mayo, May 5th |
Mexico had declared its independence from Spain on September 15, 1810 but it took 11 years before the Spanish soldiers were forced to leave Mexico. In December 1861, the French, along with Spanish and English troops, had landed in Mexico intent on collecting foreign debts incurred by Mexico resulting from the Mexican-American War (1846-1848) and the Mexican Civil War of 1858, which had left the country devastated and bankrupt. The English and Spanish quickly made deals with the newly-elected government of President Benito Juarez and left. However, under instructions from Emperor Napoleon III, the French had come to stay. They brought with them a Hapsburg prince (a relative of Napoleon) to rule the new Mexican Empire. Napoleon's French Army had not been defeated in 50 years, and it invaded Mexico with the finest modern equipment and with a newly reconstituted Foreign Legion. The French were not afraid of anyone, especially America - though it was sympathetic to Mexico's cause, it was embroiled in its own Civil War and could not support Mexico. Then, on the morning of May 5, 1862, about 4,000 poorly-armed Mestizo and Zapotec Indian Mexican soldiers led by Texas-born Mexican General Ignacio Zaragosa Seguin and the Mexican cavalry under command of Colonel Porfirio Diaz, defeated the 8,000-strong French and traitor-Mexican army at Puebla, Mexico, 100 miles east of Mexico City. One year later, France regrouped and again invaded Mexico (and won!). France was subsequently expelled from Mexico three years later with political and military assistance from the United States. Cinco de Mayo has come to represent a symbol of Mexican unity and patriotism. (Resources: www.vivacincodemayo.org, www.mexonline.com and http://clnet.ucla.edu)

Thoughtful Thoughts |
The moment we begin to fear the opinions of others and hesitate to tell the truth that is in us, and from motives of policy are silent when we should speak, the divine floods of light and life no longer flow into our souls. Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815 - 1902)

Author! Author! |
There was once a young man who, in his youth, professed a desire to become a "great" writer. When asked to define "great," he said, "I want to write stuff that the whole world will read, stuff that people will react to on a truly emotional level, stuff that will make them scream, cry, wail, howl in pain, desperation and anger!" He now works for Microsoft writing error messages . . . .
