Greetings!
Lisa 03New Year's Day is my favorite day of the year!  Not only did it bring a new tax deduction to my parents when I entered the world in 1970, but it wraps up the year just passed into a neat little package and brings the promise of new beginnings for everyone.

As a part of our new year at Mazon Associates, I invite each of you to visit our newly updated website at www.mazon.com.  I would like to take a moment to thank Linda Burson (Mazon Associates) for assisting me with the site text composition and arrangement, Bob Shema (Design Block Zero) for his skillful website design talents, Jeff Gothard (Mazon Associates) for his superb technical skills, and  others who have made this project a reality.  We have focused our attention throughout the site to proactively answering questions about factoring, and, as a result, we may have the most extensive FAQ page in our industry!

Happy New Year to everyone in 2009,

Lisa Mazon
What is Factoring?
MoneyFactoring is selling the right to payment in receivables or invoices to a factor - such as Mazon Associates, Inc. - at a small discounted rate from face value so that you do not have to wait the normal 30-45 days for payment.  Factoring is also referred to as receivables financing.  Over a billion dollars are provided to businesses each year through factoring and it is a financial tool used by multi-million dollar corporations and startups alike.

History of Our Calendar
CalendarA great work demands great planning!  Aloysius Lilius (1510-1576), an Italian doctor, astronomer, philosopher and chronologist is credited with the creation of the Gregorian calendar and documenting it in a manuscript.  However, it was not until six years after his death, when his brother Antonio presented the manuscript to Pope Gregory XIII (1502-1585), which was then given to the reform commission for modifications by Christopher Clavius (1538-1612).  Clavius, a Jesuit mathematician and highly respected astronomer (whose textbooks were used for astronomical education in Europe and remote lands for over 50 years) became known as the main architect of the Gregorian calendar.  The Julian calendar, which had been used since 45 BC, contained too many days each year and as such, mis-calculated the traditional date of Easter and other Christian holidays which were drifting relative to the seasons of the year.  On February 24, 1582, Pope Gregory decreed the new Gregorian calendar (named for Pope Gregory), to become effective the day after October 4, 1582 (Julian date) - the new date of October 15, 1582 (Gregorian date).  According to Wikipedia, "The switchover was bitterly opposed by much of the populace, who feared it was an attempt by landlords to cheat them out of a week and a half's rent."  Although only a handful of countries initially complied with the Pope's decree, most of the world with the exception of eastern Christendom and Eastern Orthodox countries were using the Gregorian calendar by the end of 1753.  The last country of Eastern Orthodox Europe to adopt the Gregorian calendar was Greece in 1923.  (Source:  www.wikipedia.com)

Vehicle Idling
2 PilotsShould I shut off the motor when I'm idling my car?  According to the California Energy Commission, the rule of thumb for idling your motor is this:  "If you're in a drive-through restaurant/business line or waiting for someone and you'll be parked and sitting for 10 seconds or longer . . . turn off your car's engine.  Why? For every two minutes a car is idling, it uses about the same amount of fuel it takes to go about one mile.  Research indicates that the average person idles their car five to 10 minutes a day.  People usually idle their cars more in the winter than in the summer. But even in winter, you don't need to let your car sit and idle for five minutes to "warm it up" when 30 seconds will do just fine.

"But you're not going anywhere.  Idling gets ZERO miles per gallon.

"The recommendation is:  If you are going to be parked for more than 30 seconds, turn off the engine.  Ten seconds of idling can use more fuel than turning off the engine and restarting it.  And when you start your engine, don't step down on the accelerator, just simply turn the key to start.

"An alternative to idling is to park your car, walk inside, do your business and then go back to your car."  (Quoted from www.consumerenergycenter.org/myths/idling.html)

Notary Facts
NotaryIt is a Notary's duty to screen each signer for three qualities:  Identity, willingness and competence.  Competence is the basic ability to understand and comprehend what is going on around oneself so as to be able to handle one's own personal legal affairs.  In order for a Notary to make a common-sense judgment about a signer's competence, the Notary must be able to talk with the signer and the signer must respond coherently.  If a signer is unable to do this, and the Notary (not others in the room), has no choice but to refuse to notarize.  In addition, the signer must be able to make a signature or a mark, an "X," without assistance from another person.  Unless a Notary clearly sees that a signer is aware of what is going on and is a willing participant, that Notary can't notarize and the notarization must be postponed until the signer is competent.  (Source:  National Notary Association, www.nationalnotary.org)

Productivity Myths That Hold You Back
Myth 1:  Organized Equals Clean.
Fact:  Too many people equate "organization" with the cold, sterile, un-lived-in spaces they see in glossy magazines.  But an organized space is simply one in which the things you need the most are close at hand, the things you need often are easily found, and the things you need rarely are out of the way but easily retrieved when needed.  (Source:  www.mercola.com)

Business As It Should Be

1.  When you see a change that will benefit an area of the business, ask the people involved if they think it is a good idea

2.  If you find a mistake, point it out kindly and offer to fix it.

3.  If you make a mistake, acknowledge it.

4.  If you accuse someone of making a mistake, and it is your mistake, apologize.

5.  If you need help, ask someone if they have time to help you with a specific task.

6.  Don't volunteer for work if you don't have time to handle it.

7.  Don't offer help if you are not willing to give it.

8.  Answer questions patiently

9.  If someone makes a suggestion, consider it.

Thoughtful Thoughts
What a large volume of adventures may be grasped within this little span of life by him who interests his heart in everything, and who, having eyes to see what time and chance are perpetually holding out to him as he journeys on his way, misses nothing he can fairly lay his hands on. - Laurence Stern (from Fields of Gold)

Two Pilots
2 PilotsTwo blind pilots are both wearing dark glasses.  One is using a guide dog and the other is tapping his way along the aisle with a cane.  Nervous laughter spreads through the cabin, but the men enter the cockpit, the door closes and the engines start up.  The passengers begin glancing nervously around, searching for some sign that this is just a little practical joke.  None is forthcoming.

The plane moves faster and faster down the runway and the people sitting in the window seats realize they're headed straight for the water at the edge of the airport.  As it begins to look as though the plane will plough into the water, panicked screams fill the cabin.  At that moment, the plane lifts smoothly into the air.  The passengers relax and laugh a little sheepishly and soon all retreat into their magazines, secure in the knowledge that the plane is in good hands.

In the cockpit, one of the blind pilots turns to the other and says, "You know, Bob, one of these days, they're gonna scream too late and we're all gonna die."  (Contributed by R. Watkins, Honolulu, HI)
