School Nurses Day 2012

Hello

National School Nurse Day is May 9th!

May is a special month...we celebrate our mothers, we honor our fallen soldiers, and here at Get In Touch, we join with schools across the United States to pay particular tribute to School Nurses - grateful for all they do to care for our most precious gift - our children.

More than 76,000 School Nurses are on the front lines of healthcare for children in our great nation, and oftentimes, they are the only form of healthcare a child may ever have.

Along with our friends at the National Association of School Nurses (NASN), we honor these unsung heroes...

from New Hampshire to New Mexico...Massachusetts to Montana...Alabama to Alaska...the Netherlands to Nigeria...South Korea to Spain...we are in awe of the sacrifices School Nurses all over the globe make to provide exemplary care, extraordinary compassion, and lifesaving education to our children.

If you have an opportunity to do so, remember to "thank a School Nurse" - not just on May 9th, but as often as you can.

School Nurses provide us all with a healthy future.

Hope Lives!

Spotlight on Schools:  Nigeria

This letter reminds us of why we do what we do here at GIT:

Dear Mary Ann:

I am Dr. Adesola Ogunfowokan, a nurse lecturer in Nigeria whose area of interest is in school health. I am not a resident school nurse but I usually visit schools to conduct research and carry out school health services. I came across The Get In Touch Foundation during the 2012 Annual Conference of the NASN in Washington, DC. It's my great pleasure to be associated with The Get In Touch Foundation.

I feel highly fulfilled to be able to impart this generation for health promotion most especially being able to lead young girls to be responsible for their health. The Daisy Wheel was used to educate young girls on breast self examination in a public school in Nigeria (West Africa) yesterday (April 4th, 2012). It was a time of fun for both myself and the students. Although we were unable to make it a pink day it was a day used to commemorate the World Health Day which is to come up on the 7th April. The students and the teachers were excited about the teaching. In fact, the teachers that missed the teaching session wished they could have the opportunity again. At the end of the session, a pack (10 pieces) of the Daisy Wheels was left with the school nurse as resource material for teaching the students on BSE.

Some of the pictures taken at the event are attached to this mail. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be associated with The Get In Touch Foundation and to impart the lives of young girls.

I still wish to get more Daisy Wheels so that I can reach as many girls as possible in Nigeria. Well done!

McKinney Boyd High School Does it Again

Our friend, fellow-breast cancer-survivor and school nurse Valerie Wright emailed us recently with an update on the goings-on at her Texas school.  She writes:  "Our McKinney Boyd HS Boys soccer team sold t-shirts with "Wrighteous" on the back in honor of little old me.  They had a "Pink Out the Pitch" soccer game on March 5, 2012.  It was a wonderful night!  Attached is the picture of me with the boys the day they presented me with the shirt they created.  I was so surprised!!

I am speaking to the girls during their health classes and PE classes next week - I can't wait!

Things are looking good now and I'm feeling good....trying to keep up with all these kiddos here at Boyd High School!!

All the best to you!  Be Bold....Be Boyd!!

Valerie

Valerie sent a check for $250, representing funds raised for GIT at the "Pink Out the Pitch" soccer game, the fourth "GIT Your Pink On!" event held there in the last year.  Thanks, McKinney Boyd, for being such big fans of both Valerie and GIT!

United Way Distinguished Service Award

The United Way of Milford, CT recently held its Community Builders Recognition luncheon, and "celebrating our local treasures" was the theme.  I was proud to receive the Distinguished Service Award and delighted to be joined by some of our GIT board members, a local treasure I am honored to work with and celebrate alongside of!

NYC Bridal Week

Our friends at Victoria Nicole were busy this past month, showing their fall collection at New York's Bridal Week events.  Proudly displayed along with the collection was GIT's Daisy Wheel, which is given to each bride along with her new Victoria Nicole dress. Tracey Saab, our National Events Coordinator, visited the show and posed with the models, too!
