200 And Counting
Other than the heat, the altitude, the mountains, and the relentless quad-busting downhills, it was a pretty easy marathon. (Insert that little smiley emoticon thing here.)
What hit me as I started though, wasn't the toughness of the course. It was the amazing journey that started at the high school track one day back in 1994, doing two miles with my Tater Kater and finding out that if I ran slowly, I could get through two miles without stopping. It continued, through my first 10K, my first River Bank Run, and my first marathon in Chicago in October 1995.
Running marathons has opened up the world for me. It has taken me to every state, to every continent, to places that many people will never visit. Marathons aren't just about running. It's more than that. It's the ability to set a goal, make a plan, and follow it through to completion.
If you're training for your first marathon, you're on the way to an amazing life! If you've done one already, you already know. You can do ANYTHING!

STREETS OF FIRE
A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...
The first Grand Rapids Marathon was headquartered at Kosciuszko Hall in 2004.
If you're nostalgic for those older, simpler times, or if you'd just like to enjoy an 8K run, some beer and pizza, and a bunch of nice people, head out on Saturday night, August 7th for the Streets of Fire 8K, presented by the Grand Rapids Running Club. Go to www.grandrapidsrunningclub.org for more info!
SOCKS, HATS, EXTRA SHIRTS
Order stuff. Help me get my storage space opened up for this year! Last year's shirt price is now down to $10 plus shipping. I just cut the sleeves off of one so that I could use it for a summer training shirt. Also will be great for those warmer marathons that are coming up in the next few months.
Extra Red Shirts from 2009 are available at the BUYSTUFF link. $10. Socks, $5.00. Hats are $10.00. www.cooladventures.net/buystuff.htm. Still have a bunch of the 2008 shirts for only ten bucks too, if you like.

Mother Knows Best! By Dr. Ed Kornoelje
I just returned from running the Bryce Canyon Half Marathon (I highly recommend it if you are ever in southern Utah in July) and was reminded of a few things mom used to say that will help your running. These are not new, but mom always liked reminders as well!
Read directions. About 5 minutes prior to the start of the race a runner came up to me and asked what "that thing on my shoe lace was" and "did it come in my race packet?" Of course she was referring to my chip, and after I told her what it was she scurried off find her packet (and chip). Over the next few months there will be lots of information given out-in your training program, on the website, and (later) your race packet. Read and reread these things, even if you think you have it all down-you won't be sorry you did.
Always double knot your shoelaces. This was one that I put into practice myself in Bryce Canyon myself after running 9.5 miles of a 10-mile race with one shoelace untied. I was able to finish the race, but a few times my foot slipped a bit, and I was always a little worried I might lose my shoe during the race. (Why not stop and tie it? I might lose precious seconds!) Double knotting is easy-do it before the race starts.
Talk to strangers. Well, mom isn't always right. "Don't talk to strangers" is a great idea when you are a kid, but during a race go ahead and talk. You may have seen me use this one before-say something to the spectators you pass. Why? It will make the spectators feel good about coming out, and it will give you a boost in the middle of the race. Don't believe it? Try it! You won't be disappointed.
Here's another hydration tip: just swishing a carb drink in your mouth may help your performance. According to the July issue of Runner's World a study showed that runners who rinsed with a carb drink before and every 15 minutes during an hour run ran faster and longer than those who used a placebo. If you get queasy drinking sports drinks, swishing may do the trick. If your run is more than an hour, you will need find something you can stand to swallow.

Want to do something fun? Yesterday, we hit the track again for some speed play. This morning was my turn to run the session--and I've been watching some new infomercials with some interesting exercises that got the upper body feeling the love.
Try a free session if you like. Meet us at John Ball Park. Bring a towel and some light hand weights (5, 8,10--whatever you can handle.)
5:30, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Want to try a couple sessions for free? Come on out. Email me with the subject line "Boot Camp" for more info!

I was just updating my website at cooladventures.net a little bit ago when I realized that sometime in June I went over 20,000 LIFETIME MILES! WOW! I know that some people do that in only a few years, but for a kid who grew up with asthma and didn't really start running until only about 17 years ago, I'm pretty geeked about that. My big goal is to run the circumferenc of the earth, which is 24,902 miles. About 3 more years I'll have that DONE!
Don't forget to set some goals, make some plans, and SIGN UP FOR SOMETHING!
Can't wait to see you all in October at the FINISH LINE!
and the adventure continues....
