The Inside Story of the Brain
AMNH Brain

We still don't know what we don't know about the brain. But what we do know is 100 times more than we did 10 years ago. And at the rate research is going, we'll know 100 times more than that in half as much time.

The newest exhibit at the American Museum of Natural History in New York explores how the brain-a product of millions of years of evolution-produces and process thoughts, senses, and feelings.

Solve brain teasers and play interactive games that are designed to test the strength of your mental sharpness. Not to worry if you can't remember the string of 12 numbers easily. Try the suggested trick and see instant improvement.

We do know that the brain is elastic and capable of improving at any age, so start flexing it at one of the Inside Story Study Programs offered at the museum..

Brain
A surprising new study has found that the plaque buildup in the brains of Alzheimer's patients is actually beta amyloid, a normal protein that everyone has. Most people with Alzheimer's seem to make perfectly normal amounts of amyloid. They just can't get rid of it. It's like an overflowing sink caused by a clogged drain instead of a faucet that doesn't turn off.

The key to treatment may lie in controlling how the brain processes the amyloid and screening for the disease before symptoms manifest.

Is there anything we can do while we wait? Sleep and study. Participants who got adequate sleep  and those with higher education seemed at lower risk for getting the disease.
