Feng Shui is a Chinese term meaning "wind and water." Though the Chinese have practiced the art for centuries, it's more than local wisdom, it's universal common sense.
Every culture employs systems of thoughtful placement with regard to their living environment. Simple spatial organization actually comes naturally to (most) humans.
Since some of us need some extra harmony during the holidays. We asked Ann B. Gallops of Open Spaces Feng Shui for some advice.

During the holidays many of us go all out to create a beautiful welcoming home for celebrating with family and friends. To bring more harmony, balance and auspicious energy to your holidays, use these Feng Shui decorating tips to keep the Chi energy flowing and reduce the chances for conflict and anxiety.

Clear clutter and get organized. Focus on important areas, like your entryway and kitchen, to create a warm atmosphere and avoid last-minute searches for important items.
- Create extra space. Remove excess pieces of furniture.
- Display only ornaments you love. Let go of items that are broken or hold unhappy memories.
- Position your holiday tree in a spot that doesn't block walkways or Chi energy. Even better, place it in a Bagua* area that you wish to enhance. Use rounded dining and accent tables where possible to create a smooth path.
- Encourage good fortune and prosperity. Use auspicious Feng Shui ornaments like small mesh bags of gold-covered chocolate coins; shiny ornaments, small mirrors, red bows, bells and ornaments symbolizing your family's astrological animals. These give a wonderful sense of Yang energy for the most Yin time of year!

Decorate your home using Feng Shui's Five Elements to align it with the harmonies of nature.
- Wood adds vitality; it's represented by greenery and tall trees.
- Fire is passionate and illuminating; use sparkly lights and red d�cor.
- Metal adds brilliance and strength; it's present in metallic ornaments and tableware.
- Earth symbolizes stability; use earthenware pottery, creamy colors and open spaces.
- Water creates ease and refreshment; a small fountain or flowing ribbons and fabrics can represent this element.
NOTE: The lively elements of wood, fire, and metal need to be balanced with earth and water to preserve serenity and stability.
- Invite in positive Chi energy. Open doors and windows every so often, and especially after the festivities have run their course so you'll regain your sense of balance and peace. The greater the balance in your home, the greater the possibility for harmony and joy.
