Are You Having a Bad Hair Day?

How your hair looks can bolster your self-esteem or deflate your ego in about 5 seconds.

At least 75% of the women who come to me for help with their personal style are unhappy with their hair; it doesn't matter if they're 15 or 65.

Let's sort through a few of the mysteries...

  • If Sally Field can't get a flattering hairstyle, how can I? In a recent  commercial, Ms. Field's hair is messy, and the color is too dark for her skin. As a result, she looks harsh. I know they are shooting for casual and carefree, but for someone with as much spirit as she has, it's just not working.

There are fabulous hairstylists everywhere. If yours isn't working for you, keep looking. Ask someone whose hair you admire where she gets it done, and go there. The quickest way to refresh your style is get a great haircut and a color that goes with your skin tone.

  • Can Everyone Have 'wash 'n go' Hair? Your hairstylist can only do so much to make your hair wash 'n go. It's not the hairstylist's fault if you want long wavy hair and yours is pin straight or kinky curly by nature. Some hair needs a little more upkeep, no matter how it's cut.
  • Does Your Hair Have Personality? Your personal style affects every part of your image, and your hair is no exception.  Whether you're free-spirited, dramatic or sophisticated, the bottom line is that it should reflect your personality.
  • Does Upkeep Have To Be Expensive? Your hair is your most notable accessory.  This is not a place to cut corners, or you'll be miserable every time you look in the mirror.
Coloring your hair can be costly, making the idea of going gray appealing. But gray hair requires a terrific haircut and a wardrobe in your perfect colors or you risk looking frumpy and, yup, old.

Beware of do-it-yourself hair color unless you're absolutely sure it works. The more white or gray hairs you have, the more challenging it is to dye it yourself successfully. Ending up with a color that doesn't go with your skin tone is worse than being gray!
