Candy Corn is Not a Vegetable!

| Nothing can ruin the look of a party dress like the extra 5 pounds the average person gains over the holidays, starting with Halloween.
Unless we're paying attention, Halloween can be the kick-off of a big sugar rush that lasts until New Year. Don't use it (or any holiday) as an excuse to keep sweets around if you're likely to over indulge. Go ahead and hand out candy to the kiddies, but have a few tricks on hand to deal with all the extra treats:
- Indulge for a day. Mainline the Milky Ways then get them out of your solar system. Having big bowls of candy easily accessible can make you forget it's not as innocent as it appears. Candy is all about fun. Until you've eaten 10 Kit Kats...
- Freeze leftovers. You can't inhale a frozen candy bar. You have to eat it slowly or you'll chip a tooth. When you take the time to savor what you eat, you enjoy it more and are less likely to gorge.
- Know thy enemy. If you can't resist the Reese's Cups, then give out a kid friendly treat that doesn't tempt you as much.
- Size matters. Bite-size candies are deceiving. Eating small pieces doesn't seem as fattening, but unless you can stop after one or 2, you end up eating enough small bites to amount to a big splurge without realizing it.
- Save the wrappers. Instead of throwing them away, put them in a clear jar and keep them visible. This will make you more aware of what you're eating.

|
Avoid the office candy jar around 3 in the afternoon. This is when we're most likely to get derailed because of the dip in blood sugar that occurs between lunch and dinner. Be prepared with a healthy snack.
Don't get caught hungry. Eat high quality meals regularly. Walking by a full candy jar when you haven't eaten lunch can be hazardous.
- Pay attention. Be aware of every M&M that goes into your mouth. This is hard to do if you're popping them while checking email, driving, or watching TV.
- Give in and move on. Deprivation is dangerous. If you constantly deny yourself, you end up bingeing.
