Have less but love it more. Here's how:
Do a "Cost Per Wear":
This is a valuable decision-making tool when buying a big ticket item. A $1,500 cashmere coat that you'll wear 5 times a week for 3 months a year for 2 years will cost you $12.50 per wear. The same amount spent on an evening dress may lead you to seek out a lower cost alternative once you do the math.
Curb your impulses: There's a certain zone that we drift into when we're about to make an impulse buy. Our power of reasoning skews or shuts off completely, which enables us to act on the impulse. Go somewhere and do something else for awhile. You'll be surprised how often 'out of sight is out of mind.' If you can't stop thinking about it, then at least you've given yourself the opportunity to consider it with a clear head.
Buy for your current reality: Buying an item on the speculation that you'll wear it when lose weight, have a tummy tuck, or achieve some future goal is not conducive to sound mental health. If you never reach your goal, it'll represent an ill-conceived failure every time you look at it. You have more important things to agonize over.
Beware of oddities, apparitions and curiosities: To fit into your wardrobe, an item needs to work with what's there. Everything you buy should work with at least two things you already have. We've all bought items that evoked style fantasies that had nothing to do with our current reality.
Nothing is a bargain unless it fits: Try everything on first. The extra few minutes this takes will be less than the time it will take you to come back and return it if it doesn't fit.
A sale is not an excuse for buying anything: Ask yourself, "would I buy this if it wasn't on sale?" If the answer is no, pay attention. No matter how much or how little you pay for something, if it looks like it belongs on someone else's body it's not worth the price.
Don't be a Stranger...If you feel 'a little strange' in it, then you'll probably look that way. People that aren't comfortable in what they're wearing have a way of making it obvious.
