Finding Love Online
Couple dating

Albert Einstein said, "Gravitation is not responsible for people falling in love." Meaning the right person isn't likely to fall on your head. To make connections, you have to search where you're likely to find them.

Today, that's online. People over 50 are Match.com's fastest-growing segment of users, with a 300% increase since 2000.

It's a good time to be a single boomer looking for love: 29% of boomers are single, 70% of them date regularly, and in the 55-64-year-old category, there are 92 men for every 100 women. Potential dates are out there,  and online dating is no more dangerous than regular dating if you do your homework.  It can be an exciting adventure.

Build  a WOW profile.

Two words--Good Photos. They should make you look your best AND they should be recent. Save yourself the embarrassment 10 year old photos will cause you. The truth matters. Misrepresenting yourself will make it hard to get beyond the first date. Among the biggest complaints about Internet dating is that people are not truthful about some of the most obvious things.

Write your profile as though you're talking to your ideal match. Be yourself on a particularly good day and describe what makes you special. Remember, too much information is as bad as too little. Anyone can list adjectives and activities. Don't we all like to think of ourselves as warm, smart, honest and kind? Avoid clichs. Who doesn't like walks on the beach? If anyone else can say the same thing, you need to be more creative.

Write your profile in your word processing program and spell check it before copying it into the template. If all this feels too daunting, find someone to help. You want a profile so fabulous you'll want to date yourself!

Stay Focused

Linda Miller's cyber searches have yielded over 400 first dates, but no soulmate yet. But she realized that mistakes are a terrible thing to waste, so she documented her quest in a book, In Search of My Last 1st Date.

Many of Linda's "love" connections remain friends and she uses their stories (in their words) as a prism though which we see cyber dating from the male perspective.

Her "ground rules" make online dating easier and you're less likely to get burned and more likely to be successful. Sort of like skiing; with the right gear, you can ski better and stay on the slopes longer.  Here are some of her best:
