Good Jeans

Nothing screams 'mid-life fashion crisis' like jeans from a bygone era.

Jeans are a major fall item for retailers. Since there will soon be lots of choices, it's  a great time to think about updating.

French Dressing Jeans: technically designed with tummy support.

We asked Glam Girls JoJami Tyler and Deborah Boland of Fabulous After 40 to suggest some brands fit for women over 40 and to share some tips on when it's time to update.

They said, "It's time for some new jeans if your old ones:

...sparkle."

Too much bling-bling can make you look like a ding-a-ling after 40. Sparkles and embroidery are not hip at the moment, so put those glitzy jeans away or they'll be calling you a Golden Girl!

...have pockets in the wrong places."

First consider what back pockets are doing or not doing for you. Flaps and adornments emphasize.Plain pockets or no pockets are best for most women. Always look in a "rear view" mirror before buying.

...have whiskers at the crotch."

MEOW! (translation: no good). Cat whiskers, patches, tears and other unusual markings make you look like a desperate cougar. You don't want to look like you raided your teenage daughter's  closet. If you own a pair, save them for gardening, cleaning, or sitting on the couch (alone) petting your dog.

...are faded and pale."

After 40 faded is faded and can accentuate aging skin and create a dull, tired look. A dark, clean jean is much more current. Dark-colored jeans are as good as black pants at creating the illusion of a slim, trim bottom half.

...weigh more than your carry-on."

If you never step on a scale in your favorite jeans for fear of adding several pounds, you'll be happy to know that jeans have gotten softer, lighter weight, and have lots of comfortable, forgiving stretch built in now.

Cambio Straight Leg

If you always wear boot cut:

Boot cut jeans are flattering on most bodies and balance a fuller figure. So we say keep wearing them.

However, if you're slim, consider a pair of the newer straight-leg styles which you can wear with flats, heels, or tucked into boots. Try them with tunics, a sweater cape, an oversized handbag and large sunglasses. WOW!
