We Are NOT Our Mothers!

Maidenform Bra
Today's woman is no wispy-waisted stick figure in a pointy padded bra.

New York just hosted the second annual Full Figured Fashion Week. It doubled in size from the first one. Even though the event targeted young trendy women, the point is clear. Bodacious curves are driving fashion these days and the options are increasing.

The average woman is now a curvy 5'4", 165 lbs. and likely to be a size 14-16. We researched the resources featured during 2010 Full Figured Fashion Week and found some worth considering.

Whatever your size, but especially if you're full figured, there are a few things to consider before you buy:
  • It has to fit. Size is just a number. Generally garments should skim the body not cling.
    • Pants that are too tight in hips or thighs emphasize those body parts. For the leanest look, pants should drop in a straight line from the hips to hem without hugging the thighs.
    • Shirt buttons shouldn't be under pressure. If you're busty, look for styles with darts to avoid gaping between buttons.
  • Wear the right undergarments. A good bra fitter can tame tummies and make back fat and love handles disappear. Find one near you. July 28, we feature Jene` Luciani, bra expert and author of The Bra Book.
  • Hone your style. Find the wardrobe staples you can build your style on.  Everything you put on should be flattering. MyShape has tips on determining your body type and finding looks that work. For suggestions building a wardrobe see Flashionista's interview with stylist, Sherrie Mathieson.
  • Cheap isn't always better. Buy quality basics and update with less expensive trendy items. Just remember 2 things: you get what you pay for, and nothing is a bargain unless it fits.
