Women RocK!

|
To really "get" the idea that women rock the world, try to imagine it without them. When a couple of hundred female entrepreneurs gathered in New York last week for 2 days of power networking combined with marketing, media, and public relations seminars, the buzz was strong enough to ignite some serious heat. It was the Savor the Success Women Rock the World annual event. The speakers were all women who had built successful businesses and were generous about sharing their secrets. Their businesses were varied, but the commonality was that real change happened for them when they were forced out of their comfort zone.
Situations like unexpected growth, cash flow problems, near bankruptcy, or incompatible partners, forced them to take risks they hadn't signed up for. Savvy management of the unforeseen was the difference between success and failure.
We can all relate to some of their most useful wisdom whether we have our own business or not.

Poppy King: The Lipstick Queen

|
"I think dishonesty in advertising is over. I don't think people care that celebrities use a product. I will not promote my product this way, even if it means it takes me longer to build my business. I don't want my product to speak to a sense of inadequacy."
King doesn't use a standardized ideal of female beauty. Her newest line, 15 Minutes of Fame Glosses, is her way of saying everyone's a celebrity.

Lisa Price: Carol's Daughter

|
"You can't just sell yourself on paper. You have to get out there and prove that you (and your product) are special."
Price ran her business from home for 6 years. When she decided to open a retail space, she was told that she needed 6 months rent ($14,000) at the lease signing. To gather the money, she went to family, friends, and piggy banks, walking into her signing with cash that included rolls of change. She had $36 left in her bank account.
As of now, her company has 9 Carol's Daughter stores and the product is also carried in many additional retail locations.

Taryn Rose: Taryn Rose Shoes.

|
Taryn Rose is an orthopedic surgeon who built a luxury shoe line she designed with style and comfort in mind.
"Fashion and function should translate into what women have wished for since shoes were invented: Style that's comfortably sexy, day and night."

"Why are we able to construct a watertight rationale for not taking a risk when we know that plunging in is the very thing we need to do?
Because fear is a powerful force." Libby Gill
