Try This Trick at Home

Look into a mirror and repeat these words, "You're looking at the problem."
Twirl around a couple of times and look again. Repeat these words: "You're looking at the solution."
Get the picture? We are our own worst enemy and our own best salvation. Since the power is within us, we might as well use it to our advantage.

According to Leslie Sokol, PhD and Marci G. Fox, PhD, co-authors of Think Confident Be Confident, doubt causes us to undervalue our strengths and over emphasize our weaknesses.
Sound familiar? It's not uncommon to let our insecurities overwhelm our intellect, control our mood and dictate our behavior. In a flash, we're in an all-out confidence crisis.
Sokol and Fox suggest that when doubts flare up, we should try to identify what's triggering them. Then we can work on zapping the negative thoughts and replacing them with confidence boosting ones.
With mindful practice we can avoid getting into self-defeating situations. The more we react confidently to situations, the more it becomes second nature to do so.
Most of our individual triggers depend primarily on how we want to be viewed by others. It's common to overemphasize what others think of us and what we imagine they think is usually not accurate.

Here's what we're doing in our inter-office Flashionista Confidence Boosting Blow-out:
- We're setting realistic goals and keeping a log of accomplishments daily. Our goal is to give ourselves credit for at least 5 things every day.
- We're talking to ourselves. We'd be crazy not to. Why should our friends and family be treated to positive encouragement and support anytime they need it, and all we get from ourselves is negative feedback?
- We're not letting our family, friends, or co-workers get our heart rate up. We're doing it ourselves. Our plan is to break a sweat several times a week by exercising at least 4 times for 40 minutes to an hour.
- We're delegating and asking for help. Being a good manager does a lot more for confidence than being a silent martyr.
We have a tendency to form limiting beliefs about what we're capable of achieving. One trait that most successful people have in common is a heightened sense of self-confidence.
