Accentuate the Positive

Garnet Hill Cover-up

Covering what we'd rather not expose makes it easier to forget it's there. Until we shop for a bathing suit that is...

Weird lights and trick mirrors that make the funhouse funny but aren't so amusing when they're reflecting back our dimpled lumpy thighs.

Avoid department store dressing rooms and look your best at the beach with our suggestions for artful camouflage and exciting shopping sites (with return policies).

Large mid section?  Create the illusion of a slimmer waistline with a wrap detail or asymmetrical design around the middle. Like this print tankini and solid bottom from Swimsuits For All.

Where does it go? The 10 pounds that the Miraclesuit causes to disappear, that is. Available from retailers like Macy's Bloomingdale's and Lord & Taylor.

Avoid suits with belts, ties around the waist or horizontal stripes (of any size).

Big bust? Look for tops with underwires for the most flattering support and coverage. The lift and separation creates definition between your chest and torso and makes you look taller and leaner. Graphic prints, sweetheart necklines, deep-Vs and halter tops are all flattering options. The wider the straps, the more comfortable the top.

Avoid skimpy triangle bikini tops and high scooped necklines- they only highlight large chests.

We found a lot to love at Swimsuits For All and Fig Leaves.

Small bust? Go for lightly padded tops and cha-cha-cha like ruffles, beads, and embellishments. Prints, like the Boston Proper tropical below are fun and so are bright colors, like the red Norma Kamali from Nancy Meyers.

Underwire bra tops are also good for balancing proportions.
Avoid colors that are soft, pale or close to your skin tone.

Full legs and thighs? The lime green top and printed bottom of the Lane Bryant suit proves you don't have to avoid bright colors or prints. The black suit and skirt from Everything But Water is really a suit-for-all-bodies.

Make sure skirted suits or cover ups reach below the tops of thighs. Avoid boy shorts, as they cut across the area you want to camouflage and end up accentuating what you want to cover.
