Poison Apples & Other Delicacies

The price difference often forces us to err on the side of economy when it comes to organic versus non-organic produce.
The Environmental Working Group, an environmental research and advocacy group, reports that more than half of our total dietary risk from pesticides comes from just 12 foods.
On the other hand, it also reports that there are a number of conventionally grown produce items that are not that hazardous. To minimize your ingestion of harmful pesticides, consider going organic whenever possible, and especially when eating the foods where the danger is highest.
The 12 riskiest non-organic foods are: Peaches, apples, bell peppers, celery, nectarines, strawberries, cherries, kale, lettuce, grapes (imported), carrots, and pears.
The 15 least risky non-organic items are: onions, avocados, sweet corn, pineapple, mango, asparagus, peas, kiwis, cabbage, eggplant, papaya, watermelon, broccoli, tomatoes, and sweet potatoes.

7 To Say NO To!

|
A recent Prevention Magazine article, 7 Foods That Experts Won't Eat, lists the health experts and their scary surprises like canned tomatoes, and microwave popcorn. The suggestion is those that can't be switched for their healthier counterparts are best avoided.
Canned tomatoes. The resin linings of tin cans contain bisphenol-A (BPA) a synthetic estrogen that's been linked to reproductive problems, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. The acidity in the tomatoes causes BPA to leach into your food.
Microwave popcorn. The chemicals it takes to make it, including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), in the lining of the bag, are part of a class of compounds linked to infertility in humans, according to a recent study from UCLA. In animal testing, the chemicals cause liver, testicular, and pancreatic cancer. Studies show that microwaving causes the chemicals to vaporize and migrate into your popcorn. They stay in your body for years and accumulate.
