Free movies, popcorn and lemonade! This showing of two environmental movies is the second in a free, family-friendly environmental film series to raise awareness about our environment, ecology and present-day challenges and successes.
Doors open at 6 p.m. Screenings of FRESH the Movie and The Unfractured Future begin at 7 p.m. The films will be shown at Hilltop Hanover Farm & Environmental Center, 1271 Hanover Street, Yorktown Heights. Bring the whole family and a picnic dinner.
Produced and directed in 2009 by ana Sofia joanes, FRESH the Movie runs 72 minutes. FRESH celebrates the farmers, thinkers and business people across America who are re-inventing our food system. Each has witnessed the rapid transformation of our agriculture into an industrial model, and confronted the consequences: food contamination, environmental pollution, depletion of natural resources, and morbid obesity. Forging healthier, sustainable alternatives, they offer a practical vision for a future of our food and our planet. Among several main characters, FRESH features urban farmer and activist, Will Allen, the recipient of MacArthur's 2008 Genius Award; sustainable farmer and entrepreneur, Joel Salatin, made famous by Michael Pollan's book, The Omnivore's Dilemma; and supermarket owner, David Ball, challenging our Wal-Mart dominated economy.
The Unfractured Future is the product of a Pace University media class. It brings Native American voices to the forefront of an hot topic in New York State: the natural gas extraction process known as hydraulic fracturing. The film urges all to envision an unfractured future together. It offers perspectives rarely heard in the American environmental movement or in mainstream media today.
Following the show, WAC Communications Director Tara Collins and Hilltop Hanover Farm Manager Lu Munz will lead a discussion about clean water, sustainability and what you can do to make a difference. This summer film series is hosted by the Friends of Hilltop Hanover and sponsored by the Watershed Agricultural Council with funding from NYC DEP.
