TrottaPAUL TROTTA ACCEPTS KARL CONNELL AWARD: Watershed Agricultural Council Forestry Program Manager Tom Pavlesich and Paul Trotta, 2009 Karl Connell Award recipientThe Council's Forestry Program recognized Paul Trotta for his dedication to landowner education and forestry practices over the past 33 years. Formerly with NYS DEC Trotta (pictured at right, with Forestry Program Manager Tom Pavlesich on left), humbly accepted the Karl Connell Award, presented to champions of forest stewardship practices within the Catskills region. The plaque was created by Jamie FitzGerald Rustics: the wood bowl was created by Katrok Woodworks; both are Catskill WoodNet members. Over 100 people attended the annual Forestry Dinner & Silent Auction which raised $2,500 for the Jude Zicot Memorial Fund and $3,389 for the Council's Conservation Easement Stewardship Fund. Make an online donation to the Easement Stewardship Fund here.
 
StaffersSeth Hersh, Database Admnistrator, Watershed Agricultural CouncilCOUNCIL ADDS TWO STAFFERS: Seth Hersh of Fleischmanns (at left) accepted the Council's position as Database Administrator and Troy Bookhout of Bainbridge (below right) joined the Easement Program staff as Conservation Planner. Both men will be based out of the Walton office at 44 West Street. In total, the Council directly employs 41 people; another 100 are indirectly affiliated through third-party agency subcontracts and construction projects. Read more about Seth and Troy.

CRDConfSAVE THE DATE: CATSKILL REGIONAL DAIRY, LIVESTOCK & GRAZING CONFERENCE:The annual conference is scheduled for Thursday, January 14, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at SUNY-Delhi's Sanford Hall. This year's topics cover dairy management, livestock processing, and alternative energy for the farm. Registration includes three workshops/panel sessions and a banquet luncheon of local foods. The event is sponsored by the Council's Farm to Market Program and CCE of Delaware County. TVdocsCOUNCIL AND NYC WATERSHED FEATURED ON CANADIAN AND EUROPEAN TELEVISION: Council board member and farmer, Tom Hutson (and the eagles that nest on his property off County Route 10, Hamden) were featured in "TEEB: Protecting Nature is Profitable," a 10-minute video released along with the G8's Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB) final report on November 13, 2009 in Brussels. WAC's Communications Director, Tara Collins and DEP assistant commissioner, Kathryn Garcia also explained the roles of upstream landowners and downstream consumers in the City's clean water quest.

Watershed farmers Dave Holley (Walton) and John Hussey (Delhi) along with SUNY-ESF professor Rene Germain were featured in a 20-minute TV segment, which aired on La Semaine Verte on CBC Radio Canada. Both documentaries highlighted the NYC watershed's unique approach of enlisting the help of private landowners to promote and protect clean drinking water.
