Chenango County resident Craig Cashman, formerly the executive director at Opportunities for Chenango, accepts leadership role at Council. |
WALTON, NY, OCTOBER 19, 2009 -- The Watershed Agricultural Council has hired Craig J. Cashman as Executive Director effective October 26, 2009. Cashman will oversee the organization's day-to-day operations as the Council's Chief Executive Officer. Cashman recently left Opportunities for Chenango Inc., a Community Action Agency basd in Norwich. As Executive Director there, he managed the $7.5-million nonprofit with 140 employees since March 2006. Now, Cashman will coordinate the Council's programs in agriculture, forestry and conservation easements with an annual budget totaling over $18 million; the organization operates out of three offices in the New York City watershed.
"We look forward to putting Craig's leadership skills to work during this time of transition," said Fred Huneke, Council Board Chairman. "Craig brings with him expertise in the not-for-profit management and economic development sectors, both of which will enable him to direct the Council's future. We look forward to bringing our ultimate mission and vision of the Watershed Agricultural Council to fruition. The Council is not only dedicated to improving water quality for nine million New York residents, but also to enhancing the economic viability of agriculture and forestry within the New York City watershed communities. Under new leadership, the Council will be improving its organizational transparency, empowering staff and bolstering programmatic goals in agriculture, forestry and conservation easements within the Croton and Catskill/Delaware watersheds. We're confident Craig will guide us in becoming a better regional leader on behalf of farm and forest landowners. His experience as a certified grant writer, evaluator and administrator will also enable the Council to diversify its annual income stream, thus stabilizing our own economic future." Over the past ten years, Cashman has developed and coordinated over $50 million in foundation, local, state and federal grants for various agencies. His experience is based in the health and social services fields; however, Cashman specializes in administrative transitions, fiscal challenges and programmatic growth.
Cashman earned a M.S.W. in Administration-Social Work from the University of Albany, School of Social Welfare; he received his B.A. in Sociology from SUNY-Plattsburgh. He also holds community service roles with the Chenango-Delaware-Otsego Workforce Investment Board (board member), Hospice of Chenango County (board of directors), Rotary International (member) and Upstate Institute at Colgate University (Community Board member).
Cashman replaces Dr. Daniel Palm who has served as the Council's Interim Executive Director since April 2009. "The Council thanks Dan for his willingness to serve as our Executive Director during this transition period. He has successfully helped us clear the slate in anticipation of Craig's arrival," added Huneke. 'We wish Dan well in all of his future endeavors and hope he will rejoin the Council's Board of Directors in the future."
The Watershed Agricultural Council helps private landowners to improve their farm and forest lands in order to protect clean drinking water for nine million New York City residents. The Council works with almost 1,000 property landowners in developing conservation plans and construct conservation practices in accordance with farm and forest management plans. The Council's mission is to support the economic viability of agriculture and forestry through the protection of water quality and the promotion of land conservation in the New York City watershed region. The nonprofit is funded by The New York City Department of Environmental Protection, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Forest Service and other federal and foundation sources. The WAC is an equal opportunity employer and provider.
