The Challenge is just one of many promotional events marking September as "Buy Local Month in the Catskills," a collaborative effort by Farm Catskills and the Pure Catskills buy local campaign. By purchasing $10 per week of local products, people can directly help farm families and indirectly bolster the regional economy. In celebration of Buy Local Month, NYS Ag & Markets Commission Patrick Hooker (center) pledges his support to purchase local foods for the next 52 weeks. A month of special promotions and events related to the economic, community and environmental importance of local foods launched on September 6. The Pure Catskills buy local campaign joined forces with Farm Catskills to connect local residents with healthy, fresh food produced in their communities.
To date, nearly 200 people have taken the Challenge, pledging to spend over $50,000 in September alone on local product buying, purchases that ultimately infuse farm families, communities, businesses and regional economies with grassroots-generated support just rhough the practice of buying local foods.
Pure Catskills is an economic initiative of the Watershed Agricultural Council. The WAC is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to support the economic viability of agriculture and forestry through the protection of water quality and the promotion of land conservation in the New York City watershed region. The WAC is funded by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and other public, foundation and private sources.
