WAC Receives Federal Stimulus Funding
Agricultural Program participants will indirectly benefit from the Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA). The Council and Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) recently received $1-million in funding to subsidize technical support for agricultural projects targeting water quality over the next two years.

23 Events Sponsored by Pure Catskills
Get outdoors and connect with the local food movement! Attend one of the Pure Catskills summer events highlighted on this Pure Catskills 2009 Events Calendar. Twenty-three agricultural-based, educational opportunities are scheduled now through November. With funding from the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, Pure Catskills and the Council funded $50,000 worth of grassroots festivals, children's workshops and community gatherings.
Register by July 10 for the first in the Dairy Group Workshop Series, cosponsored by WAC and CCEDC.

The Forestry Program is hosting a hands-on equipment demonstration at the Deposit Lumberjack Festival. Loggers and forestry professionals are invited to participate; for more information, contact Karl at (607) 865-7790, ext. 125.

Of Interest:
"Watershed" is a man-made forest of 1,500 plastic water bottles collected from the New York City area, which serves as a visual representation of one second of U.S. consumption. Out of the 50 billion bottles of water consumed each year, 80% of these bottles are currently not being recycled. Bottled water is 1,900 times more expensive than tap water, and the toxins emitted by it have been linked to serious health problems, such as reproductive issues and cancers. "Watershed" was created with the hope that viewers will shed the notion that they need to buy water in plastic bottles. If we are looking to better the environment, water is a great place to start, since we have the best quality water coming out of our taps.
