Midtown Expands Public Safety Program

Police Patrols to Replace Escort Program

New initiatives in lighting and safety information

In response to the priority of improved public safety and improved perception of Midtown as safe neighborhoods, the Midtown Community Benefits District Public Safety Committee has developed a number of initiatives.  Highlights of the program include increase of patrols by off-duty Baltimore City Police officers under a contract with the District; promotion of Citizens on Patrol teams; and a pilot program to increase street lighting in the Madison Park neighborhood. We are reviewing proposals for use of state of the art technology for live monitored cameras and communication stations.

In order to step up our public safety services and make best use of the limited surtax dollars, our Public Safety Committee recommended and our board approved the discontinuation of our escort service, which will no longer be available after April 20th.  Patrol driver Clarence Johnson will be transferring to Midtown's Clean Team as of April 20th.  The safety escort service, which began when we had a team of safety ambassadors who would provide a pedestrian escort within the district.  As the safety guides were eliminated to move resources to our sanitation services, the escort was provided by our one remaining safety team member in our patrol van.  What began as a a public safety service has evolved mostly into a shuttle type service, and was no longer helping us achieve our mission.

Preventing Car Theft

The Common Sense approach is the simplest and most cost-effective way to thwart thieves. Here are the basics of the Common Sense approach:

  •  lock your car
  •  take your keys
  • park in well-lighted areas
  • park in attended parking lots
  •  don't leave your car running, even for
  • just a few minutes
  •  close your car windows completely
  • don't leave valuables in plain view
  •  don't hide spare keys in the car
  •  keep your registration card with you
  • park your car with the wheels turned
  • towards the curb
  • rear wheel drive vehicles should be
  • backed into a driveway
  • front wheel drive vehicles should be parked front end first in a driveway
  • if you have a garage, use it
  • if your car is going to be unattended for
  • a long period - disable it

Visible and Audible

Deterrents

There are many devices designed to alert thieves that your car is protected, such as:

  • audible alarms
  • steering wheel locks
  • brake pedal locks
  • steering column collars
  • theft deterrent decals - Maryland
  • "Watch Your Car" program
  • tire locks
  • window etching

Vehicle Immobilizers

Vehicle Immobilizers prevent thieves from bypassing the ignition and hot-wiring your car. Examples of these devices include:

  •  smart keys
  •  fuse cut offs
  • ·kill switches
  • ·starter, ignition, and fuel disablers

Tracking Systems

These high tech sytems are designeded to be hidden in your vehicle and, when activated, will emit a signal that the police can monitor and use to locate your vehicle.
