"Ex-gay" Rhetoric Comes to Uganda
|
|
|
For the "ex-gay" movement, "change," "healing," "coming out of homosexuality," and "ex-gay" is about behaviour modification. There is no change in sexual orientation, only in life style. - Steve and Jose |

Dear Other Sheep Reader,
Uganda, like much of East Africa, is steeped in the Bible and evangelical teachings. In 2007 and 2008, Jose and I visited Uganda briefly. In July of 2008 we gave a full day seminar on the Bible and homosexuality in Kampala, Uganda. Uganda, a religious country, is a haven for "ex-gay" rhetoric. Recently, a three day seminar, March 5-8, 2009, on "ex-gay" tenants, was conducted in Kampala, Uganda, for clergy, lay people and others. The on-site reports given here in this issue of Other Sheep eNews are from the LGBT community of Uganda. They rightfully experienced this seminar as "anti-homosexual." It is frightening to live in a country where society, the government and the church all hold, for the most part, an ideology that is anti-LGBT so that when "ex-gay" rhetoric comes to town in Uganda, it isn't laughable. It can be frightening - even life threatening - for the marginalized, unaccepted, outcast LGBT community. Victor Mukasa reorts on the second day of the seminar: 'Healing' by Harming
KAMPALA, UGANDA. Today was the second day of the anti-gay conference currently taking place in
Uganda. The workshop started at 9:00 a.m. but with fewer participants than
yesterday (about 43). The facilitators for the first half of the day were still
members of the Ugandan organization Family Life Network, together with Don
Schmierer, a member of the board of the American "ex-gay" organization, Exodus
International.
The workshop started with a recap of the first day of the conference.
Participants were asked to share what they had learned or what captured their
attention. Kasha Jacqueline told me that the first participant had nothing else
to say except, "Homosexuals are sick and dangerous." In response, she raised her
hand and asked, "What disease was discovered yesterday that you claim they are
suffering from?" Read more Above photo: Victor Mukasa of Uganda (right) and Davis Mac-Iyalla of Nigeria (left) at Steve and Jose's apartment, February 2008. Bronx, New York. Photo by Steve Parelli

SMUG's Frank reports on the final day of the seminar: Scott Lively Speaks
KAMPALA, UGANDA. The main presenter for day 3 of the anti-gay workshop was Scott Lively, a
51-year old pastor with training in theology and law. Lively said that it is not clear whether homosexuality is genetically caused
or not. But he argued that someone who identifies himself/herself as being
attracted towards a person of the same gender clearly has a disorder. Unlike
skin color or left-handedness, homosexuality is a state of mind, an emotional
reaction based on physiological clues when one is oriented towards a person of
the same sex. Read more

Seminar Claims: "Homosexuals come from a background of anger and pain"
KAMPALA, UGANDA. Ugandan activist Kasha Jacqueline from Freedom and Roam Uganda writes
about her experiences at last week's seminar in Uganda
"Homosexuality comes from a background of anger and pain"-that was the theme
of the anti-gay seminar in Kampala, Uganda last week. The facilitators and guest
speakers referred to anger, pain and wounds to help answer many of the questions
they were asked by participants.
"Will heterosexuals who have a background of anger and pain become
gay?"-a participant asked. It's very possible because many homosexuals have
come from broken families or have been sexually abused, Don Schmierer responded.
Many homosexuals go in search of what they didn't get in childhood, which ends
up being sexual and then leads to a homosexual lifestyle. Read more
