SyracuseCoE, CenterState CEO Award CAP Grants to Five Local Companies
State Assemblyman William Magnarelli, SyracuseCoE and CenterState CEO announced at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry on Jan. 27 that five companies have received Commercialization Assistance Program (CAP) awards totaling $248,300 to promote the commercialization of innovative green and clean technologies. The announcement was made in SUNY-ESF's Baker Laboratory, where technology by one of the recipients, Rapid Cure Technologies, is being developed and tested.
The five winning companies are:
- Ephesus Technologies
- GreenView Energy Management Systems
- Rapid Cure Technologies
- Synairco
- Synex
The Commercialization Assistance Program, which has awarded more than $1.3 million and supported the growth and success of 26 upstate companies, is funded by a grant secured by Magnarelli and administered through SyracuseCoE and CenterState CEO. CAP grants are awarded for projects that commercialize new products and services in the three focus areas of the SyracuseCoE: indoor environmental quality, water resources and clean and renewable energy. SyracuseCoE to Host "Spring Greening" Teacher Training, March 20
Looking to learn ways to "green" your classroom, lessons, and school? Then don't miss the second annual "Spring Greening" teacher training and workshop at the Syracuse Center of Excellence. Hosted by the SyracuseCoE Center for Sustainable Community Solutions, Partners for Education & Business, GreeningUSA, OCRRA and Onondaga Community College, this event will highlight STEM innovations in classrooms, share resources and ideas, and much more. SyracuseCoE offers a new series of research and technology forums to highlight cutting edge research by academic and industry leaders as well as the latest market drivers and trends. Each forum will feature presentations from academic and industry experts.
Speakers at the March 20 forum on Smart Grid Technologies will include:

SyracuseCoE, CenterState CEO Host NYE-RIC Bridge to Markets Program
On Jan. 11 SyracuseCoE hosted a meeting of the NYE-RIC Bridge to Markets program at The Partnership for New York City. The NYE-RIC Bridge to Markets Program is designed to connect New York State firms that have developed innovative products for advanced buildings with diverse and critical stakeholders in the target market of New York City.
Over the past year, SyracuseCoE and its NYE-RIC partners have developed and demonstrated a process that creates jobs throughout the state by accelerating the adoption of new technologies developed by upstate firms in retrofits to improve energy efficiency and indoor air quality in New York City buildings.

Applications Open: Clean Tech Center Incubation Program
The next round of applications is now open for The Clean Tech Center's NYSERDA-funded clean energy incubation program. The Clean Tech Center is actively looking for developers of new clean and renewable technologies:
- Renewable Energy: Biomass, Geothermal, Hydro, Solar, Solar Thermal, Wave, Wind
- Biofuels: Biofuels, Biodiesel, Synfuels, Clean Fuels
- System Integration: Distributed Generation / On-Site Power, Energy Storage, Enabling Transmission , Power Systems Simulation, Smart Grid
- Transportation: Electric Vehicles , Fuel Cells , Hybrid Electric , Hydrogen, Alternative Fuels
- Buildings & Construction: Energy Efficient Construction Materials, HVAC, Lighting, Efficient Appliances, Indoor Air Quality , Energy Supply & Storage, Roofing, LEED Buildings

$100,000 Offered for Raymond von Dran IDEA Awards
The Raymond von Dran (RvD) IDEA (Innovation & Disruptive Entrepreneurship Accelerator) Awards will offer more than $100,000 in seed funding to college and university student entrepreneurs to start for-profit or non-profit ventures in Central New York. The RvD Awards is the largest start-up funding competition for New York State student entrepreneurs. This year extra funding is available for ideas and ventures in the green/ sustainability categories. Students at Syracuse University, SUNY ESF, Cayuga Community College, LeMoyne College, and Clarkson University are eligible to apply. Applications are due February 24. Applications Open: Center for Sustainable Engineering Workshops
CSE workshops for faculty members teaching engineering courses will again be offered by the Center for Sustainable Engineering, a partnership of Syracuse University, Carnegie Mellon University, Arizona State University, and Georgia Institute of Technology. Two workshops will be held on June 4-5 and June 7-8, 2012 at SyracuseCoE Headquarters in Syracuse, NY. Each workshop will start at 9:00 am on the first day and will adjourn by 3:30 pm on the second day. Each workshop will accommodate 30 participants. Faculty members from accredited engineering departments at four-year colleges and universities in the U.S. who have not participated in a previous 2-day CSE workshop are eligible to apply. Clarkson U. Receives Grant to Support "Local Energy Efficient Food Facility"
Clarkson University, a SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner, recently announced it's receipt of a $40,000 Educational Partnership grant from the Dominion FOundation to support the University's Local Energy Efficient Food Facility (LEEFF). This program aims to provide Clarkson students with opportunities to apply their engineering, science, and business skills to integrate a pilot greenhouse, using the technology of aeroponics to grow plants year round utilizing a biomass-solar thermal heating system, into a "living laboratory" facility. Sponsors Needed for GENIUS Olympiad 2012
GENIUS Olympiad is currently seeking sponsors for this year's event at SUNY Oswego on June 24-29. An investment in the GENIUS project is an investment in the future of global environmental solutions for generations to come. Last year, GENIUS Olympiad hosted 342 students and supervisors from 35 countries and 30 states, which were selected out of 1200 applicants. GENIUS Olympiad has become the most prestigious high school event related environmental issues. The competition is a 4 day-long event to bring science, art, creative writing, and architectural design projects developed by high school students to approach environmental problems.

*Save the Date* 10th Annual NYS Green Building Conference
Save the Date for the 10th Annual New York State Green Building Conference hosted by the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in partnership with the U.S. Green Building Council New York Upstate Chapter. The conference will be held on March 29-30, 2012 and the Oncenter Complex in Downtown Syracuse.
This conference is the forum for current green building research and development, best practices, discussions on green building science and operation and maintenance, as well as an opportunity to network with other green building experts, professionals, and researchers.
