SyracuseCoE Seeks Applications for Technology Application and Demonstration (TAD) Program
SyracuseCoE seeks applications for competitively awarded Technology Application and Demonstration (TAD) projects. Projects of interest address applications to demonstrate the "first proof of principle" or "reduction to practice" phase of new product or service development associated with air and water quality in built and urban environments. Deadline for submission is 5:00 pm (EST) March 31, 2011, with a project start date of May 16, 2011. Project completion date is on or before August 15, 2011. SyracuseCoE Industry Collaboration Internship Applications Available
Applications are now available for the 2011 SyracuseCoE Summer Industry Collaboration Internship program. This program provides support for qualified undergraduate and graduate students hosted by Central Upstate New York companies engaged in work related to indoor environmental quality or water resources, including high-performance and green building design. The goal of this program is to increase post-graduation student retention in the Central Upstate region by establishing valuable relationships between college students and Central Upstate companies in the energy and environmental systems economic cluster. SyracuseCoE Executive Director Named Recipient of 2010-2011 Chancellor's Citation for Excellence
SyracuseCoE Executive Director Edward A. Bogucz, Jr., was one of six recipients of the 2010-2011 Chancellor's Citation for Excellence, awarded at a campus ceremony on March 3. The Chancellor's Citation awards recognize individuals throughout the Syracuse University community who display outstanding achievement in teaching, scholarship and creative work. Since assuming the role of Executive Director in 2003, Bogucz has engaged the SyracuseCoE in widespread community involvement throughout Syracuse and Upstate New York, as well as support for continuous initiatives and advancements in the development of 'green' technologies. Innovative New York Wood Pellet Boilers Project Wins National Award
The ACT Bioenergy "Commercial Scale Wood Gasification Boiler Integrated with a Solar Thermal Collection and Storage System" project, currently at the W!ld Center, Natural History Museum of the Adirondacks in Tupper Lake, NY, was awarded the "Excellence in Renewable Energy Award" on March 8th in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. The high-efficiency wood pellet boiler operates in parallel with solar hot water panels to reduce heating costs and greenhouse gas emissions. The awards are overseen by the Editors of the Renewable Energy World Network to recognize companies, people and projects in the clean energy industry. Collabworx Open Web Services-Based Indoor Climate Control System Receives U.S. Patent
An open web services-based indoor climate control system being developed by Collabworx in partnership with SyracuseCoE and Platinum Partner Syracuse University was recently issued a US Patent. The system supports the interaction of building automation elements, such as temperature and light, with the occupants of the space, and will allow individuals to communicate, monitor and adjust personal environmental preferences. Clarkson University Professor Sulapha Peethamparan Receives $400k NSF CAREER Award
Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering Sulapha Petthamparan of SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner Clarkson University recently received a $400,000 Career Award from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The CAREER program is an NSF-wide intiative that supports junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, and the integration of education and research. Peethamparan's research focuses on the development, characterization and applications of infrastructure materials, mainly cement and concrete, with an emphasis on the energy and environmental issues. The cement manufacturing process accounts for four to five percent of global CO2 emission and touches on a wide range of sustainability issues including climate change, pollution, solid waste land filling and resources depletion. NERC to Host C&D Recycling Training at SyracuseCoE
The Northeast Recycling Council (NERC) is set to host a USGBC Education Provider Program for training in construction and demolition waste reuse and recycling on April 21 at the SyracuseCoE headquarters in Syracuse, NY. The day-long course, taught by WasteCap Resource Solutions, will cover development, management, monitoring, documentation and promotion of successful construction reuse and recycling, as well as educating crews for maximum efficient and compliance. SyracuseCoE will sponsor the Seventh Annual Symposium on Energy in the 21st Century, being held on April 8 in East Syracuse. The Annual Symposium brings together experts in the field of energy to present and discuss the future and possibilities of energy sustainability, energy efficiency, renewable energy and partnerships. Nunan Lecture and Research Day, Apr. 8
SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner Syracuse University's Nunan Lecture and Research Day will feature Dr. Sotira Yiacoumi, with a talk titled, " Addressing the Water Challenge." Creating infrastructure that recycles, reuses and treats water is a difficult task. Yiacoumi is currently working with scientists and engineers to combat these issues with water and energy. She will discuss her innovative methods to remove ionic pollutants from aqueous solutions and how the formation of the electrical double layer drives these methods. To learn more, click here.

SUNY ESF Offers SPARE 2010-2011 Training Courses
SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry will provide Photovoltaic Installer and Maintenance Training courses as part of the Solar Power and Renewable Energy (SPARE) 2010-2011 program. The 4-day course is board-recognized by the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP), and will teach students the basics of siting, designing, and installing photovoltaic systems.
