Lieutenant Governor Robert Duffy Visits SyracuseCoE
Lieutenant Governor Robert Duffy made a special visit to SyracuseCoE on Feb. 3 during his time in Syracuse to present the 2011-2012 Executive Budget message. On a guided tour by Executive Director Ed Bogucz and Syracuse University Chancellor Nancy Cantor, Lt. Governor Duffy was introduced to SyracuseCoE's unique capabilities, partnerships and projects. SyracuseCoE Student Researcher Wins 3rd Place at NYWEA for Green Roof Research
George Segr�, a senior in SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner Syracuse University's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, recently traveled to New York City to present his research on the SyracuseCoE green roof at the New York Water Environment Association's (NYWEA) Annual Conference. George's research, detailing how green roofs affect water quality, won him 3rd place at the NYWEA 2011 University Forum. To download his presentation, click here. President & CEO of A123, David Vieau Visits Syracuse
Syracuse University's L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science was visited by SU Alum David Vieau, President and CEO of A123, on February 22. A123 is one of the world's leading suppliers of high-power lithium ion batteries. As part of his visit, Vieau toured SyracuseCoE headquarters and SU's Green Data Center prior to his afternoon presentation to faculty, students and staff. For more information about A123, click here.

Otis Elevator Company Launches End-to-End Environmental Commitment
SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner Otis recently announced that the company will be launching a major global environmental program called "The Way to Green." The project will span every aspect of Otis' operations, including improving products and services to reduce energy consumption. Otis aims to enhance the company's commitment to environmental protection and sustainability, as well as reduce their carbon footprint. As "The Way to Green" initiative spreads through Otis, the company hopes to encourage their network of suppliers and customers to commit to environmentally sensitive practices as well. Two Clarkson University Alumni Create Professorship in Sustainability
A generous gift from two Clarkson University alumni, Jean E. and Robert C. Spence, was given to enable Clarkson University to create the Jean '79 and Robert '79 Spence Professorship in Sustainable Environmental Systems. The position was funded in order to advise Clarkson on sustainability matters, to help integrate sustainability principles throughout University practices, and to open the avenues of communication with other institutions worldwide. The title of first Spence Professor was given to Professor Susan E. Powers, who is acknowledged for her teaching and efforts within the field of sustainability. For the full story, click here.

National Grid and Green Education Foundation Launch Country's Largest School-Based Energy Efficiency Campaign To-Date
The Green Education Foundation (GEF) has launched The Green Energy Challenge program with sponsor National Grid, a SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner. The program currently includes nearly 300,000 participating students nationwide, and encourages students K-12 to audit their classrooms, schools and homes to find energy leaks. Students will research past bills and learn to implement simple changes in order to reduce energy costs and consumption during the school year. The GEF will track participating schools green efforts and spotlight results via their Green Energy Challenge website www.greenenergychallenge.us. For the full story, click here.

Dean Laura J. Steinberg Launches Invention & Creativity in Sustainability Competition
On February 21, Dean of L.C.Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science, Laura J Steinberg, announced the first annual Invention and Creativity competition. The competition will encourage the entrepreneurial pursuit of innovative and creative technologies in the area of sustainability, and focus on the development of technologies which can contribute to sustainable living solutions. This competition opportunity for LCS undergraduate and graduate students, will allow participants a chance to be mentored by local venture capitalists or experienced technology entrepreneurs, and to develop their ideas. Sustainability Enterprise Partnership Announces Magali Delmas to be 2011 Fetner Sustainability Leader
The Sustainability Enterprise Partnership (SEP) has announced that the SEP's 2011 Fetner Visiting Sustainability Leader will be Magali Delmas, professor of management at the UCLA Institute of the Environment and UCLA Anderson School of Management. Delmas is a leading academic on sustainability, focusing on environmental policy and business strategy, as well as eco-labeling and green marketing. Delmas will be on the Syracuse University campus March 1-3 to participate in a series of events a discussions with faculty and students. SUNY ESF Presents the 3rd Annual Deconstruction Summit
The 3rd Annual Deconstruction Summit will be held in conjunction with the NYS Green Building Conference by SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner SUNY ESF and the USGBC NY Upstate Chapter on Mar. 24. The summit will focus on the current status of deconstruction habits, and how to make further advancements towards implementing deconstruction in Upstate NY. Events will include a keynote discussion by Dr. Bob Faulk. SyracuseCoE Center for Sustainable Solutions Executive Director Mark Litchenstein and Linda Jacobs of the Empire State Development Environmental Service Unit will also lead discussions on the status of construction and demolition recycling in NYS. The Tech Garden to Host New SBA Program
The Tech Garden is partnering with the Small Business Administration (SBA) to roll out a new program called e200. Syracuse is one of a handful of communities across the country to be selected for this program, which has a goal of helping Syracuse businesses that are at least three years old, have at least one employee (other than the owner), and are generating between $400,000 and $10 million in annual revenue. The program will be taught at The Tech Garden and run from April to November. It is entirely free. For more information, contact the SBA.

On March 9-10, the New York Battery and Energy Storage Technology Consortium (NY-BEST) will hold its 2011 Capture the Energy Conference and Annual Meeting in Troy, NY. This year's featured speakers include Dr. Arun Majumdar, Director of Advanced Research Projects Agency- Energy (ARPA-E) of the United States Department of Energy and Francis J.
