Syracuse University Composting Program Teams Up with OCRRA, Labs Recycle Polystyrene

SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner Syracuse University's new composting program is diverting several tons of food waste away from SU Food Services' dumpsters each month and returning it back to its organic origins. The joint effort with Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency (OCRRA) has yielded approximately 30 tons of food waste for composting since the program began last semester. For more, click here.

At the same time, Syracuse University laboratories are keeping one of the most "eco-unfriendly" materials out of the waste stream. The labs recently stopped trashing polystyrene foam, better known as Styrofoam, and instead are now giving the non-biodegradable packaging material a second life through recycling. SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner Corning in partnership with Oerlikon Solar have announced that they have achieved a record-breaking 11.9% stabilized conversion efficiency in a silicon-tandem, research-size photovoltaic cell. Results were confirmed by the United States National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Based on the unique combination of Oerlikon Solar's Micromorph technology and Corning's thin specialty glass, the resulting solar cell's energy conversion efficiency exceeds the current 11.7% industry record, set in 2004, and was achieved without the use of antireflective coating.
