Registration Open for the 10th Annual SyracuseCoE Symposium, Sept. 27-28 Registration is now open for the 10th Annual SyracuseCoE Symposium on Environmental and Energy Systems. The theme of this year's symposium is "Restoring Healthy, Sustainable Communities." Plenaries, seminars, and panel discussions will explore ways in which professionals working in three sectors--research, industry, and the community--are creating scaleable innovations to address human and environmental well-being in SyracuseCoE's focus areas of clean and renewable energy, indoor environmental quality, and water resources. SU, SyracuseCoE Receive Toyota Prius PHVs for Local Demonstration ProgramBelow, SyracuseCoE Project Scientist Aimee Clinkhammer test drives a Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid Vehicle (PHV). SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner Syracuse University and SyracuseCoE have received four PHVs as part of Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc.'s US plug-in demonstration program. CuseCar, a local not-for-profit community car share provider utilizing alternatively fueled vehicles, also received two cars through the program. Clean Communities of Central New York, the local chapter of the US Department of Energy's Clean Cities Program, is managing a long-term evaluation of the vehicles. For the whole story, click here.

SyracuseCoE Welcomes Team from InterfaceFLOROn Aug. 19, SyracuseCoE hosted a visit by a team of executives from InterfaceFLOR. Included in the day-long series of meetings and events was a SyracuseCoE Research & Technology Forum presentation (below) by John Bradford, InterfaceFLOR's Chief Innovations Officer, on "Redesigning Design." As Chief Innovations Officer for InterfaceFLOR, Bradford oversees all manufacturing operations and processes for InterfaceFLOR, as well as for the overall R&D efforts for the company. Joining John Bradford were Eric Nelson, Vice President-Strategic Alliance; Stuart Jones, Vice President-Research and Development; and Daniel Price, Director of Microbiology, Preservatives Development.

Syracuse University Hosts International Indoor Air Quality ConferenceBelow, Prof. Jensen Zhang of Syracuse University's LC Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science addresses an international gathering of delegates at the 7th International
Conference on Indoor Air Quality, Ventilation, and Energy Conservation in
Buildings (IAQVEC 2010). From Aug. 15 to Aug. 18, delegates discussed indoor air quality, healthy buildings, and energy efficiency. Continuing the success of Healthy Buildings 2009, hosted by SyracuseCoE, IAQVEC 2010's technical program included eight keynote lectures delivered by prominent scientists, researchers, and architects from Asia, Europe, and North America, and more than 150 oral and poster presentations. Carrier Invests $30 Million in Syracuse Campus RemodelCarrier Corporation plans to invest an additional $30 million to further redevelop its Syracuse campus, reinforcing the site as Carrier's global research and development center. Carrier named its Dewitt facility as its lead research and development center in 2004. Since then, Carrier has spent approximately $1.1 billion on the campus with $350 million invested in engineering. This announcement expands redevelopment plans which include an upgrade to Carrier's Syracuse facilities. The company will also develop green space to replace 1.2 million square feet of aging and excess buildings. Carrier also plans to undertake environmental remediation measures including construction of three storm water retention ponds on the campus. For more from the Creative Core Report, click here.

US Green Building Council Announces Greenbuild Scholarship ProgramSyracuseCoE Charter Member the US Green Building Council's (USGBC) Greenbuild Scholarship Program is looking for individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to sustainability, plan to have future involvement in the green building industry, and will bring knowledge from Greenbuild back to their communities. Scholarship recipients receive one full-conference registration to attend the 2010 Greenbuild International Conference and Expo in Chicago, IL, from Nov. 17 to 19, 2010. Call for Participation for Creative Core Smart Phone ApplicationNew York's Creative Core has announced the development of the Creative Core Smart Phone Application, which will highlight green businesses and organizations in the 12-county Creative Core region. The development of the application (for Blackberry, iPhone, and Android Platforms) is being done this fall as part of a course taught by the iSchool at SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner Syracuse University. All businesses, entities, and organizations in the Creative Core are encouraged to apply to be listed, free of charge. Please complete this survey and send it to Elle Stasz at CenterState CEO (572 S. F.O.C.U.S. to Focus on Near Westside Initiative, Sept. 17F.O.C.U.S. Greater Syracuse will discuss Syracuse's Near Westside Initiative in the context of "Building a Sustainable Community" on Sept. 17 from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m. at the Syracuse City Hall Commons First Floor Atrium, 201 E. Washington St. Guest speakers will be Maarten Jacobs, Director, Near Westside Initiative, and Alys Mann, Director of Neighborhood Planning and Property Redevelopment, Home HeadQuarters. The talk is free and open to the public. Following the talk, the Chuckie Holstein Wisdom Keeper Garden, adjacent to the atrium, will be dedicated. To learn more, click here.
