SyracuseCoE HQ Dedication Highlights the Power of Collaborative PartnershipsAt a March 5 ceremony dedicating the new headquarters of SyracuseCoE, more than 700 attendees--government, industry, and university collaborators, as well as members of the public--were invited to "discover a new angle on sustainability." They joined together in the building's Laboratory Wing to celebrate Syracuse's newest landmark and to find out just what is inside the iconic, angular, glass-fronted facility: both its high-performance, intelligent green building features and the research and demonstration projects planned for this "living laboratory." Leading the ceremony were Syracuse University Chancellor and President Nancy Cantor and Lisa Heinzerling, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Associate Administrator for Policy, Economics, and Innovation. More Than 600 Visit SyracuseCoE at Community Open HouseOn March 6, SyracuseCoE invited the local
community to a Community Open House at its headquarters building. More than 600 people saw a program that included the Haudenosaunee Thanksgiving Address delivered by Onondaga Nation Chief Jake Edwards; a presentation by the Syracuse Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors; and words from SyracuseCoE Executive Director Ed Bogucz, Environmental Finance Center at Syracuse University Director Sara Pesek, and Oren Lyons (pictured below), Onondaga Nation Faithkeeper. In addition, the public took self-guided tours of the new building, listened to music from local groups Samba Laranja and Sophistafunk, and watched the premier of a short documentary about SyracuseCoE. Willis H. Carrier Total Indoor Environmental Quality Lab Opened at SyracuseCoE HQ On March 5, representatives of SyracuseCoE industry, academic, and government Partners--including Carrier Corp. President Geraud Darnis (below center)--formally opened the Willis H. Carrier Total Indoor Environmental Quality
(TIEQ)
Laboratory, one of the unique "living laboratories" located in the SyracuseCoE HQ. This ceremony included the presentation to SyracuseCoE of the slide rule that helped Willis
H. Carrier invent modern air conditioning, on loan from Carrier Corp. The TIEQ Lab is a one-of-a-kind research facility--largely
funded by the New York State Foundation for Science, Technology, and Innovation
(NYSTAR) and Carrier Corp.--designed to conduct experiments on the human
response to indoor environments. To learn more from Carrier Corp., click here. To read about the TIEQ Lab on Forbes, click here.

Integrated Concentrating Solar Façade Featured by Associated PressCityscapes of glass-clad buildings gleaming in the sun make Anna Dyson think about wasted energy. Dyson heads the Center for Architecture Science and Ecology, or CASE, a research consortium that wants to turn office windows into multifaceted solar power generators. Their "integrated concentrating dynamic solar façade" consists of grids of clear pyramids that help focus the sun's rays to generate energy. A prototype gets a real-world tryout after the opening of the SyracuseCoE HQ. Researchers at CASE--a collaborative research group involving Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY and the international architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill--call it a step toward exploiting the huge but largely untapped "green" resource of building exteriors. Summerhill Biomass Systems to Demonstrate Green Waste-to-Energy System, March 12SyracuseCoE StartUp Partner Summerhill Biomass Systems will showcase its unique system for converting green waste into clean, affordable energy. A demonstration is scheduled for 11 a.m. March 12 at 1520 Route 90, King Ferry, NY. Summerhill, named after the Cayuga County community where the technology was developed four years ago, has pending patents on its system for converting timber, brush, corn stalks, and other plant wastes into a burnable fine powder fuel. Company principles will show how the solid material burns as intensely as a gas--at speeds or 5/100ths to 1/10th of a second--without smoke or odor. For more information, contact Aaron Gifford.
