US EPA's Lisa Heinzerling to Speak on Smart Growth, Green Building at Syracuse University, March 5

On Friday, March 5, SyracuseCoE will host a presentation by Lisa Heinzerling, the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) Associate Administrator for the Office of Policy, Economics, and Innovation, in Maxwell Auditorium on Syracuse University Campus from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. The event is free and open to the public, with parking available in Irving Garage, located on Stadium Place. Heinzerling, who will also participate in the SyracuseCoE Headquarters Dedication at 2 p.m. on March 5, will discuss how smart growth and green building can both serve as an important component of our nation's efforts to combat climate change. A former Georgetown Law professor, Heinzerling is known for her role in the landmark 2007 Supreme Court case, Massachusetts v. EPA. She helped the state of Massachusetts successfully argue that the US EPA should be responsible for regulating greenhouse gases that could cause climate change. She is co-author, with Frank Ackerman of Tufts University, of Priceless: On Knowing the Price of Everything and the Value of Nothing. For more information, click here.

There are two opportunities to be a part of the Dedication festivities:
  • On March 5 at 2 p.m., a Dedication Ceremony will take place with featured speakers, including Lisa Heinzerling, Associate Administrator, US Environmental Protection Agency, US Rep. Dan Maffei (NY-25), SU Chancellor and President Nancy Cantor, and Carrier Corp. CEO Geraud Darnis. After the formal program, there will be self-guided tours and a chance to meet SyracuseCoE collaborators and learn about featured projects. Refreshments will be available. • On March 6 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., SyracuseCoE will host a Community Open House, where all are welcome to take tours of the facility; learn from technology demonstrations; meet collaborators; discover SyracuseCoE sustainability projects; enjoy musical entertainment from local performers, including Samba Laranja: The Syracuse University Brazilian Ensemble and Sophistafunk; and hear from Onondaga Faithkeeper Oren Lyons and Onondaga Nation Chief Jake Edwards. SyracuseCoE, Researchers Cited in Boston Globe Article on Indoor Environmental Quality and Energy Efficidency

"We have an industry that's all based on the concept of centralized ventilation," says H. Ezzat Khalifa, a professor of engineering at SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner Syracuse University. "Even though [personal environmental control] is without dispute a very good thing in terms of improving people's productivity, people have to weigh the advantages, which are overwhelming, against the costs, which are still high." Khalifa, a SyracuseCoE-affiliated researcher through the NYSTAR-funded STAR Center for Environmental Quality Systems was recently quoted in an in-depth Boston Globe article on indoor environmental quality; human comfort and productivity; personal climate systems; and energy efficiency. Along with Khalifa, the article quotes SyracuseCoE collaborator Ed Arens of the Center for the Built Environment at UC-Berkeley and mentions SyracuseCoE, which "has workstations with personal environmental control, where researchers will monitor the human response and the energy impact." The Clean Tech Center, Collaborators Make List of Top Ten Clean Tech Clusters for 2010

The Clean Tech Center--a core asset of New York's Creative Core--is named one of the "Top 10 Cleantech Cluster Organizations 2010" in a report produced by Sustainable World Capital for The Cleantech Group. Central Upstate's Clean Tech Center is ranked second in the US over CleanTech San Diego and The Environmental Business Cluster in San Jose, California. It is ranked sixth in the world ahead of Sweden's Stockholm Miljöteknikcenter and Canada's Ontario Clean Water Initiative. Says Shawn Lesser of Sustainable World Capital, "You've heard of the big apple. The green apple is Central Upstate New York. With 38 colleges and universities, 138,000 college students, $2 billion in annually funded R&D, and a green landscape that supports clean energy production, New York's 'green core' is launching and growing clean tech enterprises. The Clean Tech Center at Syracuse-based The Tech Garden, as well as Syracuse Center of Excellence, are at the forefront of the green innovation movement." To read more, click here.
