US EPA's Lisa Heinzerling to Speak on Smart Growth, Green Building at Syracuse University, March 5
On Friday, March 5, SyracuseCoE will host a presentation by Lisa Heinzerling, the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) Associate Administrator for the Office of Policy, Economics, and Innovation, in Maxwell Auditorium on Syracuse University Campus from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. The event is free and open to the public, with parking available in Irving Garage, located on Stadium Place. Heinzerling, who will also participate in the SyracuseCoE Headquarters Dedication at 2 p.m. on March 5, will discuss how smart growth and green building can both serve as an important component of our nation's efforts to combat climate change. A former Georgetown Law professor, Heinzerling is known for her role in the landmark 2007 Supreme Court case, Massachusetts v. EPA. She helped the state of Massachusetts successfully argue that the US EPA should be responsible for regulating greenhouse gases that could cause climate change. She is co-author, with Frank Ackerman of Tufts University, of Priceless: On Knowing the Price of Everything and the Value of Nothing. For more information, click here.

SyracuseCoE, Researchers Cited in Boston Globe Article on Indoor Environmental Quality and Energy Efficidency
"We have an industry that's all based on the concept of centralized ventilation," says H. Ezzat Khalifa, a professor of engineering at SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner Syracuse University. "Even though [personal environmental control] is without dispute a very good thing in terms of improving people's productivity, people have to weigh the advantages, which are overwhelming, against the costs, which are still high." Khalifa, a SyracuseCoE-affiliated researcher through the NYSTAR-funded STAR Center for Environmental Quality Systems was recently quoted in an in-depth Boston Globe article on indoor environmental quality; human comfort and productivity; personal climate systems; and energy efficiency. Along with Khalifa, the article quotes SyracuseCoE collaborator Ed Arens of the Center for the Built Environment at UC-Berkeley and mentions SyracuseCoE, which "has workstations with personal environmental control, where researchers will monitor the human response and the energy impact."
