Clarkson Researchers Receive Honors, Take On New Roles, Projects
SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner Clarkson University's James S. Bonner, professor of civil and environmental
engineering and a SyracuseCoE-affiliated researcher, has been named the first fellow of the Shipley
Center for Innovation. As the Shipley Fellow, Bonner will define the highest level of the
scholar-entrepreneur, one who strives to create wealth and employment
opportunities through commercial enterprise. Bonner was also recently named Chief
Research and Education Officer at Beacon Institute for Rivers and Estuaries. Taking over Bonner's previous position as the Director of the Center for the Environment is another SyracuseCoE-affiliated researcher, Philip K. Hopke, who served for nearly a decade as director of the Center for Air Resources Engineering and Science (CARES). Currently, the Center for the Environment is working with the University of
Michigan's School of Public Health to study the link between air
pollutants and health problems in children in Detroit. To conduct the study, Clarkson is using its Mobile Air Pollution
Laboratory (MAPL) to measure the distribution of air pollution near
Detroit's highways. The MAPL can monitor a number of pollutants,
including black carbon, ultrafine particles, nitrogen oxides, carbon
monoxide, and sulfur dioxide. For more information, click here.

National Grid Proposes Smart Grid Demonstration Program
SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner National Grid has proposed a comprehensive smart grid
demonstration program in the Syracuse area that will serve as a test
site for the energy grid of the future and provide hundreds of "clean
energy" jobs in upstate New York. The
demonstration project will encompass 39,400 homes and businesses in the
Syracuse area, which will use state-of-the-art equipment to give
customers information about their energy use and tools to reduce their
carbon footprint and manage their energy costs. The company recently submitted
its plan to the New York Public Service Commission (PSC). The proposed site was chosen because of the
Syracuse area's diverse populations of residential and commercial
customers, offering the opportunity to test Smart Grid technology with
a variety of customers. For the full story, click here.

O'Brien & Gere Wins Awards, Collaborates with SUNY Morrisville on Sustainable Food/Energy Production System
SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner O'Brien & Gere has been selected for two awards honoring
significant growth in its delivery of Climate Action Plans (CAPs) and
related greenhouse gas emission reduction services to US colleges and
universities. The Climate Change Business Journal has recognized
the firm as a winner in its Climate Change Practice category, and the
Environmental Business Journal has recognized O'Brien &
Gere's achievements in its New Practice Areas category. The awards cite
O'Brien & Gere's success in 2009 developing CAPs for six
signatories of the American College & University Presidents'
Climate Commitment, a voluntary pledge made by
colleges and universities to exercise environmental leadership by
modeling strategies for eliminating global warming emissions and
achieving climate neutrality. The firm is also collaborating with SUNY Morrisville, working on a closed-loop
production system that would be the first in the industry to
simultaneously address the future of energy supplies, food security,
local food supply, and environmental quality. The project is funded by
the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and seeks to enhance the production of locally-grown foods using a
combination of aquaculture and hydroponics called
"aquaponics." For the full story, click here.

Haworth Achieves 0% Landfill Status
SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner Haworth has announced that all its US, Shanghai, and Pune
manufacturing facilities, as well as the company's global headquarters,
have achieved zero waste-to-landfill status. Preliminary results show
that Haworth's US manufacturing facilities have gone from 4.6 million
pounds of landfill waste in 2008 to zero in 2009. Haworth US facilities still generate approximately .93 million
pounds of waste, but that is diverted into a waste-to-energy program. International Haworth
facilities that are not yet at zero waste-to-landfill status will be so
by 2011. For the full story, click here.
