SyracuseCoE, Members Featured in The New York Times
On Dec. 16 SyracuseCoE, Platinum Partner Syracuse University's School of Architecture, Charter Member Northeast Natural Homes, Start-Up Partner e2e Materials, and Collaborator Home HeadQuarters were featured in a story in The New York Times. SyracuseCoE Part of New York Energy Policy Institute
New York State announced Dec. 14 that SyracuseCoE and Platinum Partner Syracuse University will be part of the New York Energy Policy Institute led by SUNY Stony Brook, with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute also joining the partnership. The institute will work with NYSERDA and other state agencies to conduct studies, produce policy analysis, and provide guidance on energy issues affecting New York. It also will coordinate efforts at other institutions, including SyracuseCoE Platinum Partners Clarkson University and SUNY ESF; Charter Members Cornell University, SUNY Albany, SUNY Buffalo, and University of Rochester; and Brookhaven National Laboratory, City University of New York, Columbia University, Hudson Valley Community College, SUNY Morrisville, The Rockefeller Institute of Government, and SUNY Binghamton. Additionally, NY Gov. David Paterson announced the need for an "innovation ecosystem" that will promote university practices to raise awareness of entrepreneurship and industry-collaboration opportunities on and off campus, as well as promote industry practices that leverage open innovation principles and university expertise. National Grid Partners in Smart Grid Demonstration Program
A sub-applicant with Premium Power Corp., SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner
National Grid is among those selected for $7.3 million in
funding for advanced energy storage projects in New York, Massachusetts,
and California by the US Department of Energy (DOE). The funding is part of $620 million in DOE Smart Grid
Demonstration Program funds. The three-year project will demonstrate advanced energy storage for utility applications in three locations. In Syracuse, National Grid will install three energy
storage units at a substation and demonstrate
and study storage control methods on the campus of SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner Syracuse University. The systems will be
installed in late 2010.

O'Brien & Gere to Support Development of Tissue Facility
SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner O'Brien & Gere has
entered into an agreement with Empire Tissue Company to
support the siting, financing, engineering, and construction of a
recycled tissue paper manufacturing facility in the village of Solvay,
NY. The planned $125M facility will produce recycled tissue, towel, and napkin "parent rolls" for the industrial tissue
market. Production capacity will be 70,000 metric tons per year. This product will be
the feedstock required by converters processing these rolls into industrial-, commercial-, and retail-sized products required
by janitorial service providers, factories, schools, office buildings,
and restaurants. The facility will play a vital role in the re-development of
a brownfield site in Solvay and create 82 manufacturing
jobs and 300 construction jobs. For the full story, click here.

Herman Miller Receives Product Awards
SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner Herman Miller's latest designs have garnered multiple awards. Both Interior Design
magazine's Best of Year product awards and the National Ergonomics
Conference and Exposition have recognized the company's products. More than 30,000 votes were cast by the international
architecture and design community through Interior Design's website, while nearly 900 attendees were present at the conference to vote on the Attendees' Choice Awards. Voting for the latter award focused on new products "most likely to increase productivity and
profitability, while improving workplace health and safety." Herman

EFC Launches NYAgTrader.org
The SyracuseCoE-affiliated Environmental Finance Center at Syracuse University (EFC) has launched NYAgTrader.org, an online bulletin board where farmers and other agriculturalists can buy, sell, and trade surplus agricultural materials and farm byproducts throughout New York State. Based on the model of its sister site, NYFoodTrader.org, the site allows farmers to turn "outputs into inputs." Visit the site to learn more and to sign up.

IAQVEC 2010 Accepting Abstracts
Abstracts are being accepted for the 7th International Conference on Indoor Air Quality, Ventilation, and
Energy Conservation in Buildings, to be held Aug. 15 to 18, 2010 in
Syracuse, NY. IAQVEC is a premier international
conference series, held once every three years. It has previously been
held in Montreal, Canada; Lyon, France; Changsha,
China; Toronto, Canada; and Sendai, Japan. The
theme of IAQVEC 2010 is "Innovation and Integration." It will provide a
forum for presentations of original research work and findings;
demonstration and displays of innovative technologies; and
discussions of future challenges and opportunities. The
conference will cover a wide range of key research areas with the goal
of simultaneously improving indoor environmental quality and energy

SUNY Oswego Summer Institute to Address Energy Issues, July 6-15
This summer, SyracuseCoE Silver Partner SUNY Oswego will offer a two-week summer
institute about energy issues both local and global. "Energizing Education for a Better Future" is designed for secondary teachers of math, science, and technology, who will be able to directly implement activities
from this institute in their current curriculum and/or develop new curricular
units on energy and sustainability. The curriculum delivered in this institute
is designed using the principles the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering
and Math) Reform Movement that is being promoted by Congress, National Science Foundation, and NASA.Each
participant will build an energy curriculum portfolio that includes handouts,
lesson plans, and learning activities. Registration will be available from Feb. 15 until May 23, 2010. For more information, click here,

Cazenovia College to Host Symposium on "The Energy Highway," April 16 Cazenovia College's Sixth Annual Symposium on Energy in the 21st Century will be held April 16, 2010 at The Links in East Syracuse, NY. This year's topic is "The Energy Highway: Efficient, Secure, Reliable, and Environmentally Sensitive Transmission and Distribution of Electricity." The program will include speakers from National Grid, New York Power Authority, NYSERDA, National Resources Defense Council, and elsewhere. Topics will include distribution and transmission, integrating renewables into the grid, national energy initiatives, and more. Field trips to SUNY ESF (wood chips to ethanol), Fenner Wind Farm, the SUNY Morrisville biodigester, Fitzpatrick Nuclear Plant, and National Grid are optional. F.O.C.U.S. to Focus on Education and Sustainable Communities, Jan. 8
On Jan. 8, 2010 from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m., F.O.C.U.S. Greater Syracuse will present "F.O.C.U.S. on How To Build A Livable, Sustainable Community by Improving the Education of All Our Children." To learn about the role of school boards, fiscal challenges and opportunities, and constructive attitude changes, a panel of experts will convene: Larry Cummings, Executive Director of the Central New York School Boards Association; Rick Timbs, recently retired as District Superintendent of the Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES; and Peter Kapcio, Director of Reputation Management Services with Eric Mower and Associates.
