Peter King. The Building Technologies Division of Siemens Industry Inc. announced on Dec. 7 a pledge of $1.55 million to SyracuseCoE as part of a multi-year strategic and collaborative
partnership to support research and other initiatives in support of
sustainability and energy efficiency in buildings, allowing SyracuseCoE and its regional stakeholders
the opportunity to chart a vision and create a roadmap for sustainable
building development, execute specific research projects, fund graduate
student research in SU's L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer
Science, and engage Siemens' global network of innovation through the
participation of Siemens Corporate Research, located in Princeton, NJ.
Further, Siemens will directly support the maintenance and efficient
operation of the newly built SyracuseCoE HQ facility from its branch
office in Syracuse, which employs 75 people and is
joined regionally by another 235 employees serving Central Upstate New
York and Vermont. Siemens'

Maffei Announces $500,000 for SyracuseCoE Projects to Improve Energy Efficiency, Indoor Environments
BELOW, US Rep. Dan Maffei announced Dec. 7 that SyracuseCoE will receive $500,000 for research and development
projects in energy-efficient innovations for healthy buildings. Maffei
secured the funds from the US Department of Energy. The
new funding will support SyracuseCoE projects that will be conducted in
multiple facilities, including the center's new headquarters building
and homes and offices in Syracuse's Near Westside neighborhood. The projects will evaluate
opportunities to incorporate emerging energy and IEQ technologies, such
as power generation from renewable sources, including sun, wind and
biomass; systems that combine heating, cooling, and power generation;
active building façades; natural ventilation; and under-floor air
distribution. For the full story, click here.

SU, IBM, NYS Launch One of the World's Greenest Data Centers
BELOW, Nick Donofrio, IBM Executive Vice President of Innovation (retired), speaks at the opening of the Green Data Center (GDC). On Dec. 2, SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner Syracuse University (SU), with partners IBM and New York State, opened the GDC--a showcase of world-class innovations in advanced energy-efficient information technology and building systems. Constructed in just over six months, the $12.4 million, 12,000-square-foot facility on SU's South Campus uses an innovative on-site power generation system for electricity, heating, and cooling, and incorporates IBM's latest energy-efficient servers, computer-cooling technology, and system management software. When the GDC becomes fully operational in January, it is anticipated to use about 50% less energy than a typical data center in operation today, making it one of the world's "greenest" data centers. SyracuseCoE provided funding toward the research and development of many of the energy-efficient features of the GDC. In particular, Prof. Ez Khalifa of the NYSTAR-awarded EQS STAR Center headed a research team that tackled the problem of how to efficiently power and heat/cool the facility. Further, Kahlifa's team will fully instrument the GDC, turning it into a research apparatus and test bed that will benefit data center design and operation throughout the world. For the full press release from SU and for more information on the GDC, click here.

On Dec. 7, nine Upstate New York companies were accepted into the Clean
Tech Center, an incubator for renewable energy technology supported
by New York State. The announcement was made at The Tech Garden in

energy entrepreneurs across New York. To be accepted by the Clean Tech Center incubator, the nine
companies went through a rigorous application process and review
of their business plans and potential for success. The successful companies are: Antek (whose research toward lowering the production cost of solar cells is supported by SyracuseCoE), GoVo Biofuels, Greenview, Impact Technologies, Innovation
