Groundbreaking Held for Innovative Green Homes in Syracuse's Near Westside
On Oct. 21, a groundbreaking took place for the three homes that won the "From the Ground Up: Innovative Green Homes" design competition, a collaboration of SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner
Syracuse University's School of Architecture, Home HeadQuarters,
and SyracuseCoE. The ceremony took place at 626 Otisco St. on Syracuse's
Near Westside. Developed
for vacant infill sites, these residences
provide a new vision for one of the city's oldest neighborhoods and demonstrate
the value of design within a typically underserved and demographically diverse
community, incorporating the most advanced thinking about design,
sustainability, and cost-effective building practices for the single-family house. BELOW, breaking ground are (L to R) Marilyn Higgins, Vice President,

HUD Secretary Visits Near Westside
On Oct. 23, US Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan toured Syracuse's Near Westside and Northside along with US Sen. Charles Schumer and US Rep. Dan Maffei to see the efforts being made toward the sustainable revitalization of Syracuse's neighborhoods. While the Near Westside and Northside are characterized by vacant and abandoned properties, they are also targets for housing rehabilitation efforts and testbeds for innovative building technologies. National Grid Creates $350K Sustainable Energy Endowment at Clarkson University SyracuseCoE Platinum Partners Clarkson University (CU) and National Grid have announced the creation of a $350,000 endowment at CU. The National Grid Endowed Fund for Student Research Opportunities in Sustainable Energy will annually fund up to five summer research opportunities for Clarkson Honors Program students studying sustainable energy. The students' research includes areas such as power systems, energy education, energy efficiency, energy harvesting and storage, bioenergy, fuel cells and hydrogen fuel, solar energy systems, and wind energy. Students will also benefit from a series of seminars and workshops on sustainability and participate in field trips and team-building activities. BELOW (L to R) Hayley H. Electric Car Manufacturer Selects Syracuse Area
BELOW, gathering Oct. 23 to celebrate the announcement that Bannon Automotive has selected Central Upstate New York as the manufacturing site of an affordable plug-in electric vehicle are (L to R) US Sen. Charles Schumer; Paul Wimer, CEO, Bannon Automotive; New York Gov. David Paterson; Rob Simpson, President & CEO, Metropolitan Development Association; State Sen. David Valesky; State Assemblyman Al Stirpe; and Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney. The plug-in electric vehicle Bannon will build in Central Upstate is based on technology developed in the US by Reva Electric Car Company, headquartered in Bangalore, India. The company has executed a memorandum of understanding with the State of New York finalizing the site selection process, marking an important step in Bannon's plans to produce an electric vehicle based on the the Reva NXR for the North American market in 2010. Onondaga County emerged as the top choice from an initial list of more than a dozen locations in the US due to its prime location, workforce, and commitment to green and clean technology leadership. Adam Werbach, global CEO of Saatchi & Saatchi--widely known as one of the foremost experts in sustainability strategy--will visit SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner Syracuse University's campus on Nov. 12 as a guest of the Newhouse School and the Sustainable Enterprise Partnership, led by the Martin J. Whitman School of Management, SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner SUNY-ESF, and SyracuseCoE. Werbach will speak on "Strategy for Sustainability" at 6 p.m. in the Joyce Hergenhan Auditorium in Newhouse 3. Creative Core Announces Emerging Business Competition
New York's Creative Core has announced that applications are now available for the latest Emerging Business Competition. The competition will run in three categories: Emerging
Business ($200,000), innovations in agri-business ($15,000), and the Business
Idea ($5,000). The Business Plan Competition is designed to stimulate
job creation and business development by providing financial and
in-kind resources to companies in the Central Upstate New York; increase the entrepreneurial culture and visibility of entrepreneurial activity in the Creative Core; increase investment-grade deal flow in the Creative Core; and identify several high growth potential business opportunities in
Central Upstate and connect these opportunities to a wide range of
business development and capital resources both during the competition and beyond. Applications are due by Jan. 22, 2010 at 5 p.m. EST. For more information, click here.

Open Atelier Plans Move to Downtown Syracuse
SyracuseCoE StartUp Partner Open Atelier for Technology and Design has announced that it will relocate its offices from Cazenovia, NY to downtown Syracuse. Owner
Anthony M. Catsimatides, who opened the architecture firm three and a half years ago, plans to renovate the former M&T Bank Building at 451 S.
Warren St. The approximately $150,000 project will include a new facade and
renovation of the second floor for the firm's offices, and the first floor
