On Aug. 13, White House "energy czar," Carol Browner (BELOW, at left, with SyracuseCoE Executive Director Ed Bogucz) toured the Syracuse Center of Excellence headquarters building in downtown Syracuse. After seeing the HQ, Browner said the sustainably built center, as well as the collaborations in research and demonstration that SyracuseCoE and its partners are already engaged in, have helped put Syracuse at the forefront of green innovation. Said Browner to the crowd assembled at the press conference: "I see a community that is
collaborating to create a different energy future--to create not only a
clean energy building but also a healthy building." For the full story from WSYR News Channel 9, click here.

Sustainable Enterprise Partnership Announces Certificate of Advanced Study
SyracuseCoE Platinum Partners Syracuse University and the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF) will now offer graduate students the opportunity to earn an advanced credential in sustainability offered through the Sustainable Enterprise Partnership (SEP) that will provide them with the knowledge needed to address the economic, environmental, technical, and social challenges facing enterprises seeking to achieve sustainable operations and practices. The Certificate of Advanced Study in Sustainable Enterprise (CASSE) was developed to engage graduate students from a wide range of academic backgrounds in a trans-disciplinary program focused on sustainable strategies for organizations. The CASSE curriculum uniquely integrates business, science, engineering, and policy instruction with practical knowledge in sustainability. It is delivered by expert faculty and researchers from the Whitman School of Management, SUNY-ESF, the LC Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science and SyracuseCoE--the four curricular partners of SEP. This collaboration is a key distinction of CASSE in comparison to other graduate programs in business and sustainability. For more information, click here

Carrier Factory Among First to Receive LEED-EB Certification
SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner Carrier Corp. was awarded LEED for Existing Buildings (LEED-EB) certification for its Charlotte Chiller Operation plant. This is one of 11 manufacturing facilities in the world to achieve LEED-EB. To achieve LEED certification, the Charlotte factory's employees developed an alternative transportation plan which included bicycle storage and preferred parking for alternative fuel vehicles users. They also installed fluorescent lighting, improved indoor air quality, and instituted green housekeeping. As a result, the facility has already seen a 20% improvement in energy efficiency at the site. SyracuseCoE Board Member Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO, and Founding Chairman, US Green Building Council, congratulated Carrier, saying, "UTC and Carrier have demonstrated continuous leadership in sustainability and the built environment. This recent accomplishment is another example of that leadership. We believe that every manufacturing employee should work in a green facility, and we remain single-mindedly committed to delivering on our vision of green buildings for everyone within a generation."
