Workers Deconstruct House on Syracuse's Near Westside
BELOW, workers from Hope for Us Housing start the deconstruction of the house at 319 Marcellus Street in Syracuse's Near Westside neighborhood. Deconstruction, as opposed to demolition, is a way of taking down a house, piece by piece, so materials can be saved. Professionals from SyracuseCoE Charter Member Northeast Natural Homes and Fred Smith Roofing monitored and mentored trainees on the job. Housing materials in good condition--including doors, windows, flooring, lighting fixtures, and others--can be reused instead of being sent to a landfill. Materials salvaged from this deconstruction project were donated to Habitat for Humanity's ReStore--located in the neighborhood--where they will be available for purchase. Wood that is not in good shape will be ground for use as mulch. Scrap metal will be recycled and the money received for the metal will offset the cost of deconstruction. Construction of a new home on this site will begin soon. The design for this new low-cost, energy-efficient home is one of the winning entries from the "From the Ground Up" competition sponsored by Home HeadQuarters, SyracuseCoE, and SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner Syracuse University's School of Architecture. SUNY-ESF Builds Wind Turbine Power Generator
SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF) recently began testing a new "homeowner-sized" wind turbine to power its remote classrooms at Heiberg Forest in Tully, NY. As part of SUNY-ESF's commitment to service learning, a group of students analyzed various locations for a wind turbine, and their work helped place the turbine at Heiberg. Another student assembled and erected the wind turbine. Once testing is complete, the new wind turbine will be connected to SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner National Grid and begin producing electrical power. The wind turbine is another step in SUNY-ESF's commitment to achieve a carbon neutral campus by 2015. For more information, click here.

Clarkson University Teaches High School Teachers and Students About Water Quality Sensing
Nineteen local high-school teachers are on the campus of SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner Clarkson University (CU) this summer working on the Sense-It project. In October 2008, CU and Beacon Institute received a $1.4 million National Science Foundation award to expand their Student Enabled Network of Sensors for the Environment using Innovative Technology (SENSE IT) curriculum, a program that is teaching 9,000 New York high school students over three years to design, build, test, deploy, and interpret environmental sensors used to monitor water quality in the Hudson and St. Lawrence Rivers. The teachers will be joined by 40 local high-school students to help build sensors and participate in a hands-on curriculum. To read a SENSE-IT project summary, click here.

Constellation Energy Subsidiary Unveils Plans for Smart Grid Initiative
Baltimore Gas and Electric Company--a wholly owned subsidiary of SyracuseCoE Gold Partner Constellation Energy--recently announced it has filed a comprehensive and advanced Smart Grid Initiative with the Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC), including the planned installation of 2 million residential and commercial smart meters that could potentially save BGE electric and gas customers in excess of $2.6 billion over the life of the project. In an extensive pilot program that began in 2008, smart meters and a new pricing plan proved that customers can reduce peak electricity usage by about a third and enjoy significant savings. BGE is seeking prompt action by the Maryland PSC and federal approval of stimulus dollars to position the utility to move to the next phase of this potential smart grid investment. The W!ld Center Pioneers Renewable Heating System, with Help from Clarkson University
The W!ld Center--the Natural History Museum of the Adirondacks--has unveiled an innovative heating system that will use a pioneering combination of renewable energy solutions, including a highly efficient wood pellet boiler integrated with a solar tube hot water system, to heat the 54,000-square-foot facility in Tupper Lake. The new boiler system will represent the first highly efficient, commercial-sized, gasification wood-pellet boiler of its kind and size manufactured and installed in New York State. Additionally, the solar hot water tube collection system will be the first of its kind used in a commercial application in the Adirondack region. A key component of the project is that SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner Clarkson University will conduct a rigorous scientific evaluation of the energy-efficiency and emissions performance of the boiler as well as the integrated heating system and report its findings to NYSERDA.
