O'Brien & Gere Leads SU Climate Action Plan Team
Together with SyracuseCoE Gold Partner Constellation Energy's Projects and Services Group, SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner O'Brien & Gere is working with with SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner Syracuse University (SU) to establish a Climate Action Plan (CAP). Based on an extensive inventory of the institution's greenhouse gas emissions, the CAP will set new policy guidelines aimed at significantly reducing emissions, with the goal of ultimately achieving carbon neutrality. The CAP should be completed by September 2009. The CAP is part of SU's efforts to keep the pledge it made in 2007 as a charter signatory to the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment. For more information, click here.

SUNY-ESF to Study Agricultural Biomass Market In a state-funded study, SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner SUNY-ESF will survey landowners within a 25-mile radius of Syracuse to find out how many of them would be interested in selling biomass to alternative energy producers. The team expects to have answers by early summer, says Prof. Tim Volk, who is leading the study. As a first step toward assessing how much land could be devoted to biomass production, Volk's team subtracted acreage that is too hilly or wet to harvest. They also ruled out forested parcels of less than 25 acres and farm lots of less than 10 acres. After accounting for those factors, there are about 410,000 acres of forest and 168,000 acres of farmland that could produce biomass. In previous assessments, researchers calculated that would be enough to support at least a 30- to 60-megawatt power plant, Volk says. Syracuse University Implements a Green Winter Break In support of its new Flexible Work and Sustainability Initiative, SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner Syracuse University has implemented a new 2008-2009 sustainable Winter Break work schedule for its employees from Dec. 29 to Jan. 2. The days off are being called "Green Days," and are in addition to already scheduled holidays. The Green Days should enable the university to put certain buildings on a reduce occupancy footing. Several energy saving measures will be implemented in these buildings during the Green Days, including the setting of space temperatures to 60 degrees. Lincoln Supply Building Redevelopment Team Announced In October, as a component of the engagement of SyracuseCoE in a major community
project, Syracuse University requested bids from firms to provide
engineering design services for energy and environmental systems for the redevelopment of the former "Lincoln Supply Building" and
surrounding parcels in Syracuse's Near Westside neighborhood. After a competitive process, a team led by SyracuseCoE Gold Partner C&S Companies of Syracuse has been chosen to undertake the redevelopment project. In addition to C&S, the firms that comprise the team are SyracuseCoE Charter Member Northeast Natural Homes, Earth Sensitive Solutions, John Todd Ecological Design, Intelligent Converted Energy, Building Energy Solutions, and Steven Winter Associates. The Lincoln Supply Building is a four-story structure located at 109 Otisco St., Syracuse. The Near Westside Initiative, Inc. intends to renovate the building and develop multiple adjacent parcels on a one-acre project site. The first phase will focus on the renovation of the Lincoln Supply Building and site improvements including demonstrations of "green infrastructure" strategies for handling storm and/or waste water. Construction on the project should begin in Spring 2009 and be completed by Spring 2010. For more information, contact Ana Fernandez.

GLSEC Meets to Discuss Regional Sustainable Energy System
On Dec. 17 and 18, 20 members of the Bi-National Great Lakes Sustainable Energy Consortium (GLSEC)--from Queens University in Kingston, Ontario; Cornell University, Clarkson University, SUNY-ESF, Syracuse University, and SyracuseCoE--met in Alexandria Bay, NY to plan research and programmatic activities and the integration of both technology and policy to create a sustainable energy system in the Lake Ontario region. (It is hoped this renewable energy region will act as a template for other regions both across Canada and the US.) Participants also discussed areas of research leadership of GLSEC members and fund development. An annual gathering of the researchers from academia and industry is being planned for Fall 2009, under the auspices of Thousand Islands Energy Research Forum (TIERF). The Forum will provide opportunity to share information on recent energy-related research with industry, with the aim to develop research into potential products and commercialization projects. The Alex Bay meeting was facilitated and partially supported by the Canadian Consulate in Buffalo. For more information, contact Suresh Santanam.

EFC Director Named to ICLEI STAR Community Index Post
Sara
Pesek, Director of SyracuseCoE affiliated center the Environmental
Finance Center at Syracuse University (EFC), has been appointed, after
a competitive process, to the STAR Community Index Economic Development
Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) of ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability. The STAR Community Index
represents ICLEI's "National Framework for Sustainable Communities." It
is a national, consensus-based framework for gauging the sustainability
and livability of US Communities and will be launched by 2010. It is
being developed through a partnership with ICLEI, SyracuseCoE Charter
Member the US Green Building Council, and the Center for American
Progress. According
to ICLEI, "much as LEED transformed the building industry, STAR will
transform the way local governments set priorities and implement
policies and practices to improve their sustainability performance. It
will become the definitive means by which local governments measure and
'certify' their achievements." TAC members--in all, there are eight committees
in three categories--will collaborate to develop indicators and metrics
that comprise the STAR Community Index and ensure technical rigor,
scientific validity, and cost-effectiveness.
