Naturally Chilled Water Project Begins Feasibility Study
Below, standing next to Onondaga Lake, Rep. James T. Walsh (R-NY) speaks at the introduction of the Central New York Naturally Chilled Water Project (CNYCWP) feasibility study. The CNYCWP is an innovative environmental improvement and economic development project led by the Metropolitan Water Board and Onondaga County, in partnership with SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF). The CNYCWP is in the process of conducting scientific and engineering investigations to determine the feasibility and suitability of bringing naturally chilled water from Lake Ontario to Onondaga and Oswego counties, using existing rights-of-way and new technology to effectively support a large-scale municipal cooling district and other opportunities. Funding was secured for the study through SyracuseCoE Collaborator the US Environmental Protection Agency by Walsh. For the complete story, click here.

McHugh Announces $500K for Clarkson University Healthy Homes Study Congressman
John M. McHugh (R- Pierrepont Manor) has announced that SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner Clarkson
University received a $500,000 grant from the US Department of
Housing and Urban Development's Healthy Homes and Lead Hazard Control Program to study the re-suspension of particles from carpeted and
uncarpeted floors for dust control and improved air quality. This study proposes to estimate
the level of exposure reduction based on flooring choice and other
important environmental factors. The research will provide the needed
basis for informed decisions on flooring choices with respect to
limiting exposures to particles that can be asthma triggers. The researchers will
quantify the re-suspension of dust particles from human activities,
model human exposures associated with re-suspended particles, and
communicate the results. For more information, click here.

US Green Building Council Releases LEED 2009 Update The second public comment period for LEED 2009 closed on Sept. 2. Almost 7,000 comments were offered, signaling that
the membership of SyracuseCoE Charter Member the US Green Building Council (USGBC), and the many stakeholders in green building, are
deeply engaged in this important work. The LEED Technical Advisory
Groups (TAGs) reviewed comments and incorporated changes that improve LEED as
a tool. With that work complete, the TAGs passed the rating system to
the LEED Steering Committee. If approved,
LEED 2009 will go to member ballot. This will mark the
culmination of two years of work by thousands of people to make sure LEED's next
evolution resets the bar for how to certify higher performance in
buildings. Read the full letter from USGBC President, CEO, and Founding Chair, and SyracuseCoE Board Member, Rick Fedrizzi here.
