National Grid Offers Expanded Energy Efficiency Programs
SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner National Grid has added and expanded several energy efficiency programs in Central Upstate New York to help customers manage the forecast for increased market prices for natural gas this winter. "Natural gas prices are close to historically high levels and customers should expect prices to continue to be volatile," said Susan M. Crossett, National Grid Vice President of Energy Solutions Services in Upstate New York and a SyracuseCoE Board Member. "Taking steps to use energy more efficiently is one guaranteed way to reduce costs." National Grid efficiency programs include incentives for installation of high-efficiency, natural gas space and water heating equipment; rebates for specific Energy Star products; the inclusion of a self-service energy audit tool at National Grid's website; and a high-efficiency heating and water heating program for commercial customers. Clarkson University to Assist NYSERDA Research into High-Efficiency Biomass Heating Technologies SyracuseCoE Collaborator the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has announced a state-funded program to support the evaluation and improvement of biomass-fired heating equipment. The program is intended to clear a path for New York-grown fuels, create new manufacturing jobs, and improve environmental performance of biomass technologies. Nine projects valued at more than $2.5 million will compare energy and emissions performance for wood-burning equipment, including residential and commercial wood boilers, pellet stoves, wood stoves, and emerging grass-pellet technologies. The studies will be conducted by SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner Clarkson University, with help from the Northeast States for Coordinated Air Use Management (NESCAUM) and Advanced Climate Technologies. This project will be the first for an innovative Energy Park being developed at Clarkson University to study alternative energy sources. Also as part of the project, NYSERDA is working with SyracuseCoE Charter Member Cornell University and SUNY-Canton to manufacture grass pellets, identify the operational requirements for pellet stoves and boilers, determine stove and boiler compatibility with grass pellets, and evaluate the emissions from these systems. Syracuse University Inventories Greenhouse Emissions
SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner Syracuse University (SU) has published its first-ever inventory of greenhouse gas emissions. This inventory estimates, for 2001 through 2007, the amount of carbon dioxide and five other gases which were released into the atmosphere as a result of SU's operations. As part of its ongoing leadership in promoting and practicing activity that contributes to a more sustainable environment, SU has changed its temperature policy to conserve energy and reduce its emissions. By reducing the temperature of University spaces by two degrees in the heating season (Sept.15 to May 15), and raising the temperature threshold one degree in the cooling season (May 16 to Sept.14), SU will realize an annual reduction of 1,683 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions. To read the full story, click here. In related news, Kiwi Magazine has included SU in its
"2008 Green College Report: Fifty Schools that Will Help Your Kids Help
the Planet." Kiwi's 2008 Green College Report features schools leading
the way in campus sustainability and environmental
stewardship. To read the full
