Majora Carter Named Keynote Speaker for the Syracuse CoE Symposium, Sept. 29-30
The keynote speaker for Syracuse CoE's 8th Annual Symposium on Environmental & Energy Systems--Sept. 29 and 30 at the Oncenter in Syracuse--is Majora Carter. Carter simultaneously addresses public health, poverty alleviation, and climate change as one of the nation's pioneers in successful green-collar job training and placement systems. She founded Sustainable South Bronx in 2001 to achieve environmental justice through economically sustainable projects informed by community needs. Her work has been noted in numerous books and celebrated with awards from the National Audubon Society, the EPA, the NRDC, and the AIA, among many others. She is a MacArthur "Genius" Fellow, one of Essence Magazine's 25 Most Influential African-Americans in 2007, one of the NY Post's Most Influential NYC Women for the past two years, a board member of the Wilderness Society, and recording a special National Public Radio series called "The Promised Land" for 2009 release. This year, her mission extends to helping other cities, foundations, universities, businesses, and communities across around the world unlock their green-collar economic potential to benefit everyone. Hopke Named US Department of State Jefferson Fellow
Philip K. Hopke, the Bayard D. Clarkson Distinguished Professor and director of the Center for Air Resources Engineering & Science (CARES) at Syracuse CoE Platinum Partner Clarkson University, has been named a Jefferson Science Fellow by the US Department of State. The program is an initiative of the Science and Technology Adviser to the Secretary of State to further build capacity for science, technology and engineering expertise within the department. Hopke will serve a one-year assignment, working full time in the State Department or the US Agency for International Development, and then remain available to the Department as a consultant. Under Hopke's stewardship, CARES has become a major center for air quality research, attracting more than $5 million in capital funding and nearly $13 million in grants from both private industry and federal agencies. Carrier Demonstrates Energy Efficient Chiller Plant
Syracuse CoE Platinum Member Carrier Corp. has demonstrated that it has improved chiller plant efficiency by more than 10% with its Evergreen 23XRV model. The Evergreen--with Foxfire compression technology and HFC 134a non-ozone depleting refrigerant in series counter flow--provides the highest efficiency as measured by Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (ARI) test standards. Carrier demonstrated the efficiency breakthrough in its Charlotte, NC, manufacturing facility at a laboratory demonstration event. The theories presented were modeled with Carrier's Hourly Analysis Program (HAP) energy simulation tool and put to the test in Carrier's ARI-certified test laboratory. The full-load and part-load efficiencies recorded were 22% and 47% better than current ASHRAE 90.1 efficiency standards. Buildings utilizing the variable speed screw chillers in series counter flow could qualify for two Leadership in Energy and Environment Design points in the Energy and Atmosphere section. O'Brien & Gere-Designed Green Business Park Wins Federal Grant
A federal grant of $2 million, announced Wednesday, will help turn a Cortlandville, NY cornfield into an environmentally friendly business park. The Finger Lakes East Business Park will provide a campus-like environment for manufacturers working in green technologies, and it could provide about 1,250 new jobs when full. The site--adjacent to the Lime Hollow Nature Center--was designed by Syracuse CoE Platinum Partner O'Brien & Gere. The federal grant is through the Economic Development Administration and will pay for roads, water, and sewer lines, as well as the $600,000 cost of acquiring the 127-acre property, which is on NY State Route 13. The entire project will cost about $6.7 million. For coverage in the Syracuse Post-Standard, click here. For more information on the business park, click here.

SU Architecture Announces Design Competition for Sustainable Family House
Syracuse CoE Platinum Partner Syracuse University's School of Architecture--in partnership with the Syracuse CoE and Home HeadQuarters, Inc.--has launched "From the Ground Up: Innovative Green Homes." The goals of the competition are to foster the most advanced thinking about design, sustainability, and cost-effective building practices for the single family house and to elicit proposals that can be built based on the $150,000 construction budget. The site for the competition is Syracuse's Near Westside. Four pre-selected design teams will be joined by up to three additional teams selected from an open call. Each team will visit the site and submit a design proposal after the eight-week second stage of the competition. A jury will then select up to three houses for construction. For more information on the competition, click here.

Morrisville to Add Renewable Energy Training Center
Syracuse CoE Member Morrisville State College will use a $2 million federal grant to create a Renewable Energy Training Center that officials hope will stimulate the local economy by giving workers the skills to work in the rapidly growing green energy sector. The funding comes through the Department of Labor's Community-Based Job Training Grant Initiative, which aims to help colleges prepare students and unemployed or underemployed workers with the skills they need to enter growing industries in their hometowns. The grant application paints the growing demand for new forms of energy as an opportunity for job growth in Madison County. For the full story from the Syracuse Post-Standard, click here.

F.O.C.U.S. to Re-Vision, Celebrate 10 Years
Syracuse CoE Member F.O.C.U.S. Greater Syracuse is conducting a re-visioning in celebration of its 10th birthday. It is asking citizens to assess its current goals to find out how far the organization has come and what work needs to be done. On February 26, 2009 it will hold "I Love CNY: Climate Change/Weather or Not" at 11:30 a.m. at the Hotel Syracuse Grand Ballroom--the same topic and same location as the first F.O.C.U.S. event. During the nine weeks following this event, F.O.C.U.S. will conduct weekly events to gather ideas for the future of the community. The original F.O.C.U.S. goals were included in the City Comprehensive Plan, were a resource for the Sustainable Design Assessment Team, and many agencies have used the data in applying for grants.
