State Pledges to Help O'Brien & Gere Move to Downtown Syracuse
New Headquarters Will Anchor City Center's Green Building Revitalization

O & G Logo
The State of New York will invest $3 million to help Syracuse CoE Platinum Partner O'Brien & Gere relocate its corporate headquarters to downtown Syracuse. New York Gov. David Paterson announced the state aid during a stop in Syracuse on July 2. The state is providing $1 million in grants and a $2 million low-interest loan to help the engineering firm build a new six-story building in Syracuse's Armory Square district. The $25 million building will anchor a major revitalization of the city's downtown. O'Brien & Gere will apply for LEED certification for the building, becoming the latest construction project in Syracuse to pledge to build green. Other downtown Syracuse buildings that will apply for LEED certification include the new headquarters of Syracuse CoE Gold Partner King & King Architects and the Syracuse CoE headquarters. SUNY-ESF, Honeywell Complete Latest Solvay Process Remediation Target
Shrub Willows Will Be Harvested for Lyons Falls Biofuels Plant

SUNY-ESF Logo NEW
Syracuse CoE Platinum Partner SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry and Syracuse CoE Member Honeywell have finished planting 60,000 shrub willows on the Solvay basins near Syracuse. The  total number of shrub willows planted is now 100,000. The shrub willows are a productive source of green energy and biofuels for the region, while functioning as an effective "bio-cap" for the polluted land once owned by chemical manufacturer Solvay Process. The production and conversion of the shrub willows is a carbon neutral process. To add nutrients to the basins' soil and enhance the growth of the shrub willows, SUNY-ESF and Honeywell are mixing biosolids leftover from the Anheuser-Busch brewery's bio-energy recovery system in Baldwinsville, NY with a soil product manufactured at the Metropolitan Syracuse Wastewater Treatment Plant. Yard compost from the nearby towns of Camillus and Geddes is also added to the soil. In about three years the shrub willows will be harvested and used to create renewable energy at facilities such as the Lyonsdale Biomass Plant in Lyons Falls, NY. RPI Researchers: Nano Technique Boosts Boiling Efficiency
Hyper-Efficient Boiling Could Lead to Smaller Computer Chips, Lower Energy Costs

Rensselaer PI
A new study from researchers at Syracuse CoE Charter Member Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) shows that by adding an invisible layer of copper nanorods to the bottom of a metal vessel, an order of magnitude less energy is required to bring water to boil. This increase in efficiency could improve heat transfer systems, reduce costs for industrial boiling applications, and improve the manufacture of microchips. As the physical size of chips has shrunk significantly over the past two decades, it has become increasingly critical to develop ways to cool hot spots and transfer lingering heat away from the chip. Boiling is a potential heat transfer technique that can be used to cool chips, so depositing copper nanorods onto the copper interconnects of chips could lead to new innovations in heat transfer and dissipation for semiconductors. SUNY-Albany Researchers: PCBs Reduce Thyroid Function
Akwesasne Mohawk Study Funded by National Institute of Environmental Health

Adolescents exposed to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) demonstrate reduced thyroid function, according to a new report by researchers at Syracuse CoE Charter Member SUNY University at Albany. Thyroid hormones are essential for regulating metabolism, normal growth, and brain development. They also promote normal cardiovascular, reproductive, and nervous system functioning. The study, published in the June 2008 issue of Environmental Health Perspectives, was funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health. Findings reveal that chronic exposure to PCBs directly correlates to reduced thyroid function among adolescents in the Akwesasne Mohawk Nation who had not been breast-fed as infants. PCBs added through breast-feeding may not contribute to reduced thyroid functioning in adolescence, it was found. For the full story, click here.

EFC Publishes Green Infrastructure Funding Guide
Easy-to-Use Guide an Essential Tool for Municipalities Looking to Fund LEED Projects

EFC Logo-NEW
The Region 2 Environmental Finance Center (EFC) at Syracuse University has published an essential, practical, and easy-to-use tool for New York State local governments and schools that are looking to fund sustainable and environmentally friendly capital projects. This guide will be particularly useful for those applying for LEED certification. The building and design worlds are in the middle of a "green revolution," but local governments are often faced with the challenge of financing green capital projects. Thus, the "Field Guide of Financial Support for Sustainable Capital Projects" presents a list of financial and technical assistance resources that governments can use to implement and finance green building projects. The Field Guide presents resources in a user-friendly fashion, using icons to represent the LEED principals each assistance program references, the type of assistance offered, and the anticipated time commitment involved for applying for each funding source. The guide was prepared by Syracuse University Maxwell School MPA Students as part of their masters capstone project, under the direction of Prof. David Popp and the sponsorship of the US Green Building Council New York Upstate Chapter, the EFC, and the Maxwell School of Syracuse University. To request copies of the Field Guide, e-mail efc@syracusecoe.org.

High Growth Potential in IEQ, Energy, Green Building, and Water Resources

GreenTeam Logo
Central Upstate New York--the Creative Core--is well-positioned to be a global leader in the four key sectors of green technology according to results of a study conducted by the Battelle Memorial Institute. The report identifies four core sectors in which the region is a leader or has a high potential for growth: indoor environmental quality, renewable energy, green buildings and sustainable designs, and water quality/water resources. Beyond an assessment of the region's assets, the Battelle report--titled "Central Upstate New
York's Green Industry Sector: Opportunities and Prospects"--includes a green technology market analysis, an assessment of state and local policy initiatives, recommendations for developing and growing new and existing businesses in these sectors, and a prospect list of 330 leading firms that would be strong candidates to relocate to the Creative Core. "What we have received from Battelle is actionable business intelligence about the green tech and renewable energy marketplace," says Robert M. Simpson, President-Elect of Syracuse CoE Member the Metropolitan Development Association of Syracuse and Central New York. For Syracuse Post-Standard coverage of the Battelle Study, click here.

New York Legislature to Pass Residential Green Building Incentive Bill
NYSERDA to Follow Green Building Guidelines by the US Green Building Council and American National Standards Institute

New York Gov. David A. Paterson has announced that the New York Legislature has agreed to pass legislation to encourage the construction of new homes and the renovation of existing homes to meet green building standards. The bill authorizes Syracuse CoE Member New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to create a program that will provide financial incentives to New Yorkers who "go green." The amount of the grants will be based on a number of considerations, including the size and type of the residential structure. While New York has incentives in place to promote green buildings in the commercial sector, this is the first program that will provide these incentives for the residential sector.
