Syracuse CoE Awards $600,000 for Collaborative Research Projects Air and Water Quality Projects Will Address Critical Environmental Challenges
Researchers at four member institutions of the Syracuse CoE--Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, Clarkson University, SUNY-ESF, and Syracuse University--will begin innovative projects that will help improve the air quality of built environments and protect water resources, thanks to $600,000 in federally funded grants secured by US Rep. James T. Walsh (R-NY). The Collaborative Activities for Research and Technology Innovation (CARTI) grants are awarded to six projects aimed at investigating urban air pollution, understanding mercury pollution in Lake Ontario, researching salt contamination of streams and groundwater, quickly detecting water-borne toxins, modeling how urban water runoff affects natural water sources, and developing an "artificial dust" to help indoor air quality research. This third round of CARTI awards is made possible through funding from the US Environmental Protection Agency secured by Walsh, who attended the announcement. To date, Walsh has secured more than $30 million in federal funding for research and development for the Syracuse CoE. "Although the physical Center of Excellence is being constructed at this very moment, the cornerstone of this endeavor is the research that has been well underway and federally funded since 2002, and, in the case of the CARTI awards, for three rounds now," says Walsh. "The CARTI awards help to tap the considerable brainpower and expertise of Central Upstate New York to not only fuel our economic growth but solve problems of global significance." The Power of One: Raising a Company's Environmental Awareness, July 9 SUNY-ESF Special Lecture Welcomes Herman Miller's Paul Murray
As part of its series "CNY: Climate. Energy. Change," Syracuse CoE Platinum Partner SUNY-ESF, in collaboration with the Syracuse CoE, will host a special guest lecture by Paul Murray, Director of Environmental Health and Sustainability for Herman Miller. Murray has guided Herman Miller's green initiatives since 1992. He was named Environmental Affairs Manager in 1992 and Director of Environmental Health, Safety, and Sustainability in 2006. In May 2006, Vanity Fair magazine acknowledged Murray's efforts by including him in their first green issue. His lecture--"The Power of One"--will articulate how the actions of even one person can have a profound impact on raising a company's--and even an industry's--environmental awareness. The lecture will take place July 9, 2008 from 9 am to 11 am at 146 Baker Laboratory, SUNY-ESF. The seminar is free, but space is limited. For more information and to register, click here.

Sustainable Business Collaboration Releases Mini-Grant Call for Proposals
Program Will Support Transdisciplinary Sustainability Collaboration
Syracuse University's Whitman School of Management, SUNY-ESF, and the Syracuse CoE have embarked on a unique collaboration to provide world-class education and research on business and sustainability. The SBC seeks to become the national leader in sustainability policy and practice related to small and medium enterprises (SMEs). This approach capitalizes on Whitman's expertise in entrepreneurship and supply chain management and Syracuse CoE's mission to promote regional innovation in environmental and energy technologies. The SBC calls for proposals for its Mini-Grant Research Program--three grants of up to $5,000 during two rounds of funding are available this year. Professors and researchers from Syracuse CoE Platinum Partner Syracuse University and Syracuse CoE Platinum Partner SUNY-ESF with interest and expertise in sustainable business concepts, practices, metrics, and assessments are invited to apply. In keeping with the emphasis on transdisciplinary collaboration and integration, investigators from at least two disciplines will be required for each proposal. Favorable weight will be given to proposals that demonstrate active attempts to work on research questions directly applicable to SMEs. For more information, contact Elet Callahan or Lisa Cleckner.

Syracuse University Joins Newly Formed Hubbard Brook Consortium Five Insititutions Will Work on Ecosystem Science Projects
Syracuse CoE Platinum Partner Syracuse University is among five institutions that have joined with the Hubbard Brook Research Foundation to form a consortium to support research, education, and policy initiatives at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in central New Hampshire, the site of one of the longest running and most comprehensive ecosystem studies in the world. The other charter members of the Hubbard Brook Consortium are Dartmouth College, Plymouth State University, the US Forest Service's Northern Research Station, and Wellesley College. Hubbard Brook is perhaps best known as the place where acid rain was discovered in North America in the mid-1960s. "Hubbard Brook is an important research site for several Syracuse faculty members and graduate students, including Prof. Charles Driscoll, recently elected to the National Academy of Engineering," says Ben Ware, vice president for research and dean of the Graduate School at Syracuse University. "The Hubbard Brook Consortium will help to attract future generations of high-caliber scientists devoted to understanding a range of threats to forest ecosystems." For the full story, click here.

Green Construction Expert to Speak on "Fly Ash: Making Concrete Sustainable," June 19
A CNY Sustainable Speaker Series Forum, co-produced by the Syracuse CoE Office for Industry Collaboration and USGBC New York Upstate Chapter
Fly ash can be used to directly reduce the amount of Portland cement required for concrete, which significantly cuts down the amount of greenhouse gas released into the atmosphere. But its widespread use in Upstate New York has been hindered by confusion about its effects and usage. Keith Bargaheiser--fly ash product representative from Headwaters, Inc.--will discuss "Fly Ash: Making Concrete Sustainable" on Thursday, June 19 from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo, Syracuse, NY. "I plan to cut through the myths and misunderstandings about the use of fly ash in concrete. Bring your questions!" says Bargaheiser. "My slate of topics will include the effect of fly ash on concrete, including reduced permeability, higher ultimate strength, and minimized alkali-aggregate reaction; the side effects, such as reduced bleeding and initial delay in strength gain; the consistency and quality of the product delivered to the batch plant; and the relative cost and availability of fly ash." To RSVP and for payment options, contact Jim D'Aloisio.

Syracuse Named a Green Smart(ish) City
MSN.com List Ranks Syracuse Alongside Phoenix, AZ; Atlanta, GA; and Dallas, TX
Syracuse was included in very select company when msn.com recently named its 12 Green Smart(ish) Cities. The list is in fact a photo tour of "unexpected areas doing green stuff." The caveat to the word "smart" suggests that there's still work to be done for all the cities. Of Syracuse, msn.com writes, "In recent years, a push by city officials has seen Syracuse invest in green building and energy; its Center of Excellence in Environmental and Energy Systems unites businesses and institutions working on research and product development in clean-tech and renewable fuels. Destiny USA, a major mixed-used project powered by renewable energy, has garnered national headlines, and backers of a more local effort to revitalize the downtown corridor hope to create green-collar jobs and attract young workers."
