Harmon Special Ales
Citra One Hop, Woodrows Milk Stout 2010 Pro-Am & Black Tartan IPA at 99 Bottles
Harmon Special Ales

If you've not yet tried a "Special Ale" from The Harmon, of Tacoma, consider one of these.

Citra One Hop
-- for me, this had one word, "Wow!" A 99 Bottles friend who frequents The Harmon shares my love for tropical fruits was right when they told me this was "...an IPA you HAVE to try."

And they were dead-on. The Citra hop is fast becoming a favorite. Grab a nucleation etch for this beer for continual release of the sweet, pungent aromas of melon, pineapple, mango, lychee,... As you drink notice the intensifying  fruit salad Tropicals. After the fruit burst, the Citra hop spicing leads to a semi-bitter, drying finish. I really enjoy the drinkability of this Harmon One-Hop: Citra.

Woodrow's Imperial Milk Stout is the 2010 Pro-Am award-winning Russian Imperial Stout up-scaled to professional brewsystem at The Harmon. The flavors are of deeply malty chocolate-cocoa with a sweetening creamy silkiness with a boozy backing. So far reviewers are saying, "Outstanding!"

I've not yet had the opportunity to try the Black Tartan IPA, though have heard it's a black styled IPA, like Porter meets "West-Coast IPA" [read: strong hop!]. Someone even dared say, "...as good as the Alaskan Double Black IPA." CDA fans, this beer's for you.

Limit 1 per person on Woodrows & Black Tartan & ask for them at the front counter. We received just a case [12 bottles each!] of those two, so if you miss the bottles visit The Harmon for the beers on-tap.

Bowser Beer
Beer tasting for the pooch

Chateau Jiahu
Still in my Top 100 favorites

Chateau Jiahu
The main fault I have with this beer: Dogfish Head Craft Brewing releases it as an "Occasional Rarity."

When I first tried it back in 2007, it joined my Top 100 Beers and then it was gone. For an entire year I kicked myself for not having grabbed an extra bottle or two for the cellar. But then I discovered a bottle! Stored for about 18 months in proper conditions the ale matured to a lovely creature. And then I waited...and waited...and waited...

In 2009 I watched the Dogfish Head website for the Occasional Rarity Release Schedule, only to see Chateau Jiahu drop off. Could I stand another year without my sweet chrsyanthemum, white-graped, sweet honeyed Jiahu?

Yesterday she returned to 99 Bottles:
        Dogfish Head's Chateau Jiahu

And I bet by now you knew the beer I was trying after work last night! I couldn't help but wonder all day, would this ale be as lovely as I remember? Would it still fall in my Top 100?

When young, her flavors are richly intense; the honey is so forefront. The palate is smooth, the flowers lift their heads in the background, the hawthorne fruit comes out to play with the muscat grapes. That 10% ABV is so hidden in the flavor, but not the effects! That makes this beer a perfect one to share with friends. Yes, I'd say she's still a favorite, one of my Top 100 Beers.

And I'll be picking up my extras for the cellar this weekend. You won't catch me without Chateau Jiahu for a full two years again!
